Schoolchildren have been embracing World Book Day today (Thursday) by donning a fantastic variety of costumes in celebration of the annual event. Island Echo readers have this morning been sharing photos of their youngsters dressing up for school – from Dennis the Menace to Harry Potter. 6-year-old Everlyn Millie Corney (pictured left) only recently started taking an interest in reading but the character of Peggy from ‘The Pug That Wanted To Be A Star’ has sparked her imagination. The Adams family have dressed up as a variety of characters today; 11-year-old Milly as Hermione Granger, 5-year-old Lottie as Alice in Wonderland and 6-year-old Levi as Horrid Henry. Wonka has been an inspiration for Ruby-Mai Brooker, as Violet, and Sophia-Rae Brooker as Willy Wonka himself. Their brother, Finley, decided on Harry Potter, whilst Maddison Kew went for the traditional character of Little Red Riding Hood. World Book Day was established by UNESCO in 1995 and the first World Book Day was held in the UK in 1997. Since then, 2 generations of children have celebrated the charity event each year. Here is a gallery of some of the fantastic costumes put together today…

Dennis the Menace is in the Beano, which is a comic. Spiderman is in a comic and films. Buzz Lightyear is in films. None of these are books.
why so pickey,…
and anyway, they may have originated as comic strip or film characters,.. but these days all of them are available in ‘books’
There’s always some sad little blowhard who has to spoil kids’ fun.
Anything that encourages children to read should be celebrated.
Literacy standards on the island are the lowest in the whole of the UK by a long way. Maybe if the parents of these children could read a book, their children wouldn’t be dressing up as Spiderman or Dennis the Menace.
“Literacy standards on the island are the lowest in the whole of the UK by a long way”
do you have any actual evidance of that,… or is it just another negative comment on people trying to let their kids have a bit of harmless fun??
It is a well known fact and easy to check.
Picking on 5 and 6 year old kids because they wanted to dress up as characters that don’t meet your high standards of literary excellence.
Pathetic individual. Get a life.
Give a source for this, please.
If you can.
I think it’s great. When older, kids will still remember their world book day costumes even if the academic stuff fizzles away!
