Police have closed off a busy junction in Sandown tonight (Thursday) to enable the reconstruction of a fatal collision that occurred on New Year’s Eve.
On 31st December, emergency services received reports of a pedestrian being run over on the roundabout at the junction of Avenue Road, High Street and Culver Parade. This followed earlier reports of a male running in and out of the traffic nearby.
It’s understood the vehicle involved, a grey Nissan Qashqai, had travelled up from the Esplanade and onto the roundabout before striking the pedestrian – who was reportedly in the middle of the road.
The driver, a 73-year-old man from Brading, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and released under investigation following initial questioning.
Sadly, just 2 weeks after the collision, 48-year-old Jay Nicholls succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Roads Death team – part of the Collision Investigation Unit – are continuing to investigate his death.
As part of the ongoing enquiries, a reconstruction of the crash scene – using the exact car involved – is taking place in Sandown tonight.
Officers have closed off all roads to the mini-roundabout at the bottom of the High Street.
It is thought that Police will remain on scene for around 2 hours.
Southern Vectis Route 2, 3 and 8 buses are diverting locally until further notice.
