The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised 1 appliance from Newport to reports of a fire in the open this evening (Thursday).
A single appliance, manned by Blue Watch, was called to an address in Shalfleet following a 999 call reporting a bonfire.
Upon arrival, the whole time crew discovered the bonfire was in fact attended and was under control.
Firefighters are urging residents who wish to have a controlled burn to inform fire control to prevent unnecessary callouts.
They were called to the incident at around 20:50.

People can be so inconsiderate when having bonfires. On a hot/warm summers evening, when everyone has there windows open, there always seems to be some twat who has a bonfire around the Carisbrooke / Middle Road / Alvington Road area. It completely stinks & forces you to close all windows on a hot evening! Complete moron – I would love to find out exactly where the bonfire is – would be quite happy to go round with a fire extinguisher…

Seriously, would a firefighter say it was safe to have any bonfire after the hottest driest spring and the middle of summer….yeah right. Also any fire should only be set alight if the smoke blows in their house first.
