The inaugural meeting of the steering group charged with the implementation of some of the ideas and themes laid out in the Bay Place Plan met for the first time last week. The Bay Place Plan highlights potential investment and civic opportunities for the 3 Bay area communities, Lake, Sandown, and Shanklin and was first launched back in January 2024, as previously reported by Island Echo. The steering group is made up mainly of members of the public representing the 8 areas (listed below) and 2 councillors from each of the Town & Parish Councils of the Bay (Sandown, Shanklin & Lake). They are joined by our Bay Regeneration Officer and Cabinet member responsible for regeneration from the IOW Council.
- Arts and Culture
- Businesses
- Youth
- Events and Activations
- Hotels and Holiday Accommodation
- Natural Environment

- Community Organisations
Contact details for all members will be published on the 3 respective council website along with records of meetings. The group exists to provide strategic direction for Bay Place Plan projects, which will run under project groups that will now be established. If you want to get involved in any of the project groups then email [email protected] and your details will be passed on to the project group leaders. There will be at least one annual public meeting to share progress and set out the plan for the following year.

The introduction of 20mph Zones are required
in Sandown to make it a safer place.
Beachfield Road and Yaverland Road are like
Speedways.
We need stricter speeding rules in Sandown, also
a blanket ban on Pavement parking and parking on
Double Yellow Lines.
(It is a nightmare driving along the Esplanade with
vehicles being parked on Double Yellow Lines)
Coaches cannot squeeze through and it causes
unnesseccary delays.
Also vehicles are forever parking on Double Yellow Lines
outside Sandown Pier.
The Councils Enforcement Officers need to patrol the
esplanade on a permanent basis to STOP such crimes
taking place.
