More than 18 months after a crash wiped out the village’s Grade II-listed red telephone box, residents of Chale are celebrating the return of the iconic kiosk.
It was in July 2023 that a BMW and a Peugeot were involved in a collision on Military Road, outside the Church of St Andrew.
The impact forced the white BMW into the K6 telephone box, destroying the cast iron structure.
Now, a little bit of British history has returned to the South Wight – and the telephone box is looking better than ever!
It was around 15 years ago that the box became unoperational, but its listed status – granted in 1988 – meant that it could not be removed.
Over the years, the box had become tired looking and at one point had a piece of rope tied around the door to keep it shut.
The replacement box is bright red in colour and is complete with all glass panels – and a closing door.
It was installed on Tuesday afternoon and follows some 17 months of work by the Parish Council, liaising with insurance companies and sourcing a replacement K6.

Toilets are not being closed then.
At least you won’t have to pay 50p like
the toilets charge in Sandown.
What was the point of demolishing the
toilet block in Yaverland so it could be
replaced with new toilets that charge
50p to use them.
I WILL NEVER PAY 50p to use public
toilets. I pay £2,000.00+ Council tax
for such services to be provided.
The Council are literally taking the piss!
Fit a speed Camera on the roof to catch the
Numpty Motorcyclists who speed along the
Military Road.
