Television channel That’s TV will be airing a documentary on Isle of Wight trains this Wednesday (10th January). The documentary has been made using footage taken from railway enthusiasts visiting the Isle of Wight from the middle of the 20th century onwards. The title of the programme is Trainspotting: Rails in the Isle of Wight. It will examine the changes that have taken place over the past 75 years. It will be broadcast between 13:10 and 14:15. It was produced from films made by railway and train enthusiasts who visited the Island from the 1950s onwards. The documentary will record the changes to the local network, including the electrification of the former railway lines. Sadly, there is currently only 1 line in operation – between Ryde and Shanklin – as well as a heritage steam railway from Smallbrook to Wootton. However, at the end of World War II, there were 55 miles of track and over 40 stations on the Island. Further information and anecdotes on Isle of Wight Railways may be found in the heritage section of Island Echo.
