Sudden flashes of lightning, mixed with howling winds and driving rain, awoke Islanders from their slumber overnight – described by many as an eerie experience.
At around 02:20 this morning, a weather front hit the Isle of Wight bringing ‘biblical’ weather conditions. Islanders have described a ‘huge surge’ and ‘gush of power’ – others saying a ‘howl’ – as the hail, rain and wind moved across the Island from the South West.
Power was lost to thousands of homes, albeit for a short period, sending alarms echoing out across towns and villages. Wightlink’s 04:00 sailing from Fishbourne had to be cancelled as the linkspan couldn’t be reset following a power failure.
Many slept through the night unaware of the horrible conditions outside.
One Island Echo reader has said:
“Surely that can’t of been a normal weather surge in Newport? That felt bizarre… like a howl to it moments before the clap of thunder and then power flickering”.
Another said:
“The first rumble sounded so strange, was so loud and lasted so long that until I checked the lightening radar I wasn’t sure it was thunder at all, more like some kind of explosion!”

Meanwhile, a resident in Sandown said:
“It woke me up – the weirdest thunder I’ve ever heard, it wasn’t like the usual clap or rumble, can’t describe it”
In a chilling comment, another said:
“I thought it was Putin’s first delivery to the UK”.
Must admit , it woke me up and the electric went off
Back in the 20th century, it was known as a thunderstorm….
That was in the real world, not the mamby

We have had it drummed into us for years that Russia are the bad
guys, we have been fed this stuff since the cold war.
It makes me laugh, there are plenty of other countries
