The results of a recent survey has seen Isle of Wight GP surgeries rated based on what patients think, with South Wight Medical Practice, Argyll House and Tower House coming out on top.
In the national, annual GP survey, patients can share how they feel their local doctor’s surgery is performing — ranging from how easy it is to get through on the phone and how helpful the receptionist was. It also ranks how ‘good’ patients felt their overall experience of the GP practice was.
The survey was sent to a range of patients at each practice but on the Island, only an average of 117 surveys were completed across the 12 surgeries.
Only 1 Island practice ranked higher than the area average in every question — the South Wight Medical Practice.
The survey found that only 15% of respondents from Newport Health Centre found it easy to get through to the practice on the phone. Also, 51% considered it “not at all easy”.
But, how do you rate them …

The bay medical are useless. Im a Very sick individual and they have messed my medication up 3 times in the past year. Leaving me days without them. Not down to any fault of my own. But there’s!
I haven’t been able to see my Doctor face to face at the Bay since the end of 2019 before Covid .
Me neither. Nearly two and a half years.. Have had one phone call to arrange a hospital appointment and discuss my problem. That was Feb.I have just got the appointment for St Mary’s…for 29th July
The doctor forgot to do a referral letter, a year later it was also found some of our medical records belonged to somebody else so who was to blame for that massive mistake.
Absolute joke is, with all this cost cutting, that the NHS paid for ice creams from an expensive local supplier for every staff member and to every NHS building on the Island.
Even those who phoned in saying it was too hot to work still had access.
This must have cost thousands, and whilst a ‘nice’ thing to do, old people who fall have to wait hours in the heat for an ambulance, whilst staff who, because they are on full pay, could not be ‘arsed’ to come in, were delivered free ices.
Disgusting.
Agree at the cost of it all, at one work place they purchased a chest freezer for staff to bring in their own ice creams etc in hot weather. Would have been cheaper to do that or install air conditioning units as the hot weather situation isn’t a one off.
Get your facts straight
Evidence your statement, Toni old chap.
Toni is a girls name, old chap.
Yes but it was an arranged Zoom meeting…Maybe a decent pay rise that everyone during the height of the pandemic applauded maybe you too.
Your memory has failed you…See a doctor
Newport Health Centre’s ratings really don’t surprise me. Almost impossible to get an appointment with anyone, let alone a doctor.
Totally agree. They were, at best, poor before covid but now are absolutely diabolically not fit for purpose. I have been with them, and their predecessors, for most of my life and I have never known such a poor service. If you do manage to get to see a doctor then they themselves are brilliant but the problem is that this is almost impossible.
Esplanade surgery in Ryde is just as bad, have not seen a doctor face to face since covid, tried to obey their instructions to have a important drug / treatment review in June but was told no appointments available until mid August with the threat if i did not have the consultation my medications could be stopped and the “consultation” isn’t even with a doctor.
Improvements needed in all areas by all surgeries across the island what will be done about it NOTHING. Glad I’m not the only person that can’t get any to answer the phone at the Newport surgery
I’ve been trying to see any doctor at the Bay for the past 3 years. I’m going to have to use my savings and go private admy heart palpitations are getting worse but hey I guess I could wait until I have a heart attack. One less to treat then.
And the reason for the survey is what?
Indeed. Given this is an annual national survey (and has presumably been run for quite a few years) it is appalling that improvements are not forthcoming (or better still forced) on those practice that need to improve. Cowes medical centre has deteriorated markedly over the last 3-4 years and I would say it is the absolute worst practice I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. Dont really see the point in doing a survey if nothing comes of it. Why bother?
Brookside surgery in freshwater, I cannot fault them at all, I call up and I am guaranteed a call back by end of day, usually lunchtime. It’s the chemist who mess up the medication for me not the doctors. People forget how may patients there are, they are doing their best, I definitely would not want their jobs as no one is ever happy with the service.
Too many old people clogging up the system,
people seem to live forever nowadays.
Lots of thumbs down BUT you know it’s true.
Are you suggesting a cull?
I admire your insight, but that may be a bit ott.
Maybe in the future.
But keep up the brain storming.
WELL DONE !
yes :)))
AND ITS A YES FROM ME !
I’ve not seen a docter for over 15 years, not including looking in the mirror.
ps ping pong, leave ting tong alone, weirdo.
You know, Ting tong, your really are a pathetic dimwit!
The time will come when you too are elderly. Who are you going to blame then?
Lots of thumbs up because you know it’s true.
Too many young people clogging up the system.
What we need is a decent war to cull the numbers a bit as we have had in the past.
Can’t speak about all of them but a lot of gp’s still aren’t having face to face appointments which is absolutely ridiculous!! hospital staff have been face to face since the beginning really and not much changed in some areas. It’s a cop out and they’ve gotten away with it too long. We should not still have to be sending photos of our ailments at this stage either. It’s virtually impossible to sed a doctor and when you do they’re dismissive and often don’t know what to tell you. I had one looking my ailment up! If wasn’t that difficult as I’d already done that myself! Nurse practitioners, another bunch of the im not really sure crew as wel
No surprises on Newport HC results, more importantly, what are they going to do to rectify the obvious problems. I had an annual review, pre COVID, waiting room was empty, so went straight into nurse, all ok, but needed to change medication. Nurse goes to next room to speak to Dr, who has no patient in there. I asked nurse if I could have a quick word with Dr , ” oh no he won’t see you without an appointment”. Enough said.
I expect he was practising his putting shot or playing games on his computer.
And who was asked to answer questions for this survey, my household certainly wasn’t! It is amazing that still you cannot seem to see a doctor face to face, confidence in GP’s has fallen off the scale and who can blame us? It is a scary prospect that if you fall ill you have to jump through hoops just to get an opinion of someone on the other end of a phone before you can even get inside the surgery.
I received a text message asking me to complete it but it only gave 72 hours to respond, so I missed the response date as I was away working. I had assumed wrongly that these surveys gave at least 7 days to respond.
