Hovertravel services between Southsea and Ryde are suspended this afternoon (Tuesday) due to the discovery of suspected ordnance in Southsea.
It is understood that what is believed to be a WWII bomb was found by diggers carrying out sea defence works at around 09:30.
As a result of the discovery, Police have been called and cordoned off the area near Southsea Common – just a short distance from the Hovertravel terminal – whilst bomb disposal experts are drafted in.
The cross-Solent operation is to issue an update at 12:45 as to whether services are to resume anytime soon.
UPDATE @ 17:00 – Services remain suspended at this time.
The next update is due at 18:45.
UPDATE ON WEDENESDAY – The unexploded ordnance was made safe last night at around 21:30.
All cordons have since been lifted and Hovertravel services have returned to timetable.
