As the cost-of-living crisis continues, the Isle of Wight Council has launched a consultation to consider changes to the Local Council Tax Support Scheme. Nearly 10,000 Islanders receive council tax support this way, including those in work but below a threshold that is dependent on personal circumstances. The proposed scheme, set to start in April 2025, aims to introduce changes that will align more closely with national developments, including the move to Universal Credit. Proposed changes include creating one simple earnings disregard rather than 2, which would benefit both full-time and part-time earners. Also proposed is a change to the assessment of childcare costs for Universal Credit claimants to make it fairer for them, as well as to disregard new government-funded scheme payments that some claimants may receive. The changes will not affect pension-age recipients of local council tax support but could impact both working-age recipients, as well as users of council services more widely. Therefore, the consultation is open to all Island residents with the results forming part of the decision-making process for setting council tax and the overall council budget next year. The consultation is available at https://forms.office.com/e/GNLR9Qeb4f and the closing date is Monday 23rd September 2024. Paper copies are available from council offices and libraries from 12th August, or you can request a paper copy be sent to you by calling 01983 823950. An easy read version is also available.

Am I right in saying that the council has now decided to reduce the time by amount of months to pay being 7 months from 10 which increases monthly payments ,if so why is this as times are hard financially and puts more pressure with higher payments
I was not aware that the council has changed the payment months from 7 to 10. They have not sent anyone written informatiom to the best of my knowledge, that this in their intension. If you pay by DD, this is a legally binding contract and you should order your bank not to alter the payment dates already agreed.
Do you mean you think they are changing the council tax bills to being paid over 7 instalments instead of 10 for the year? If so – are you aware that even though they always send their council tax bill to you with say 10 payments of £xxx, you can tell them you are paying in 12 instalments. So whatever they want to change the number to, you can insist you are paying in 12 equal payments. They cannot refuse. We changed ours by just letting them know. We spread ours over 12 months.
The consultation is a sham.
Multiple entries are allowed. Once you have completed it you can simply go back and answer it again from scratch and resubmit a second / third/ fourth etc.
Once again the scroungers get more help, how is this supposed to encourage them to work then, typical council, all this is doing is making sure, as we have seen recently, there is no civil unrest, as those who have the time to cause trouble are the scroungers in society.
Also people work the minimum amount of hours so as to claim these benefits, which is ridiculous, I know several people who could work more hours but don’t due to loss of benefits….
Meanwhile those that earn just over the threshold are penalised for having pride and working hard
…
I was never advised by the careers office that should I be a lazy so and so I would be better off !!!!!!!!
All those on benefits are protected.
If you are just getting by on your wages and feeding your family without the hand outs then these are the people who suffer.
NOT those on benefits they are given everything they need and more.
Food banks, baby banks, pet banks, uniform swap shops, council tax reductions, housing benefits, free this free that.
No wonder people don’t want to work.
So sorry for all those just getting by and working hard for their families without the luxury of benefits, YES I SAID LUXURY.
My partner is disabled and CANNOT work, I am her full time carer and live on a shoestring, we don’t get free this and free that, so wind your neck in and stop tarnishing everyone with your stained brush.
stop expecting the rest of us to support you bacon – we don’t like spongers- get a job you lazy git.
you are part of the problem – free loading parasites claiming tax payers money, when you should be working and supporting your self -taxes would be lower, if it wasn’t for scroungers leeching off the state
successful people are discriminated against and punished by having more of the money they have made through their own hard work and effort, taken from them in taxation and it is then handed to the feckless, lazy, failures in the form of benefits – that is wrong on every level.
Council tax and green waste charges on the Island are excessive,
and what with the £2 nightly parking charges
It ain’t that bad in Pompey. I use to be able to park after 6pm
FREE
Yet another scheme to reward the idle and feckless at the cost to the hard-working. Almost makes me wish for the return of the Workhouse.
Years ago if you were ignorant and selfish enough not to use free contraception then you and the partner would either have to work harder or you would suffer hardship.
Now I know so many who won’t work above 16 hours as they are worse off
End this madness as it creates bitterness from those who fund these users
We pay
Tax on our wages
Council Tax
Green waste charges
Vehicle Tax
Etc Etc, there ain’t much left at the end of the day
It’s no wonder that the 60% of the worlds wealth went to
just 1% of the wealthy.
The other 40% went to US the other 99% of the worlds
Population.
WE LIVE IN SUCH AN UNFAIR WORLD, RUN BY ROGUES
