Isle of Wight residents have a few days left to provide feedback in Hampshire County Council’s consultation over local government reorganisation.
The public survey, which will close on Sunday (17th August), lays out the council’s preferred option to create 4 main local authorities in the region.
The authority’s proposal is:
- North: Basingstoke and Deane, East Hampshire, Hart, Rushmoor, Winchester
- South-West: Eastleigh, New Forest, Southampton, Test Valley
- South-East: Fareham, Gosport, Havant, Portsmouth
- Isle of Wight
The County Council said that the consultation is more than council structures and that it’s about people and places.
Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Nick Adams-King, has said:
“The Government has made it clear that change is coming, but we believe that change should be shaped by the people who live and work here – not imposed by those who don’t know our area.
“This is your chance to help shape a simpler, stronger and more secure future for local government – one that ensures high quality, protects the services people rely on most, and puts local voices at the heart of decision-making.

He added:
“Thank you to everyone who’s taken part in our survey so far, but if you haven’t yet, now’s the time. As part of our survey, you can also provide us with your thoughts for the names of the four potential new councils.”
The feedback collected will be reviewed and will help the council to shape its final proposal which will be submitted to government by Friday 26th September.
Under the government’s plan, the 2-tier system will be abolished, and larger unitary authorities, each covering a population of approximately 500,000 people, will be established in the region.
