Harry Vernon has won the 3rd fundraising Chess Tournament at the 50 Plus Centre in Shanklin, organised by Vectis Chess.
Limited to only 24 players, a variety of ages, genders and skill levels took part in the tournament. Phil Stevens finished in 2nd place, Dave Watts came 3rd and Carl Sheeran finished in 4th place.
The next tournament is set to be Bobby Fischer random chess or – as it’s better known – Chess 960 on 2nd September. In this form of chess, the back rank of pieces is randomly positioned for each and every game. As such, there are no set opening moves, which makes it easier for beginners to get to the middle game. The Vectis competition system has been developed to encourage novice players to compete in chess tournaments.
Isle of Wight chess has been supported by the charity Chess in Schools and Communities. Isle of Wight chess clubs are now growing in popularity.
