A Ryde nightspot is putting forward its latest bid to stay open until the small hours today (Thursday) as it takes the Isle of Wight Council to court.
The case of Harbour House will be heard by Isle of Wight Magistrates, as it tries to overturn a decision to deny it an extension to its premises’ licence.
The popular bar and restaurant is looking to stay open, sell alcohol and play music until 01:30, 7 days a week and submitted the application to the council in March this year. However, after hearing from concerned neighbours and licensing officers, the licensing committee rejected the extension.
In May, Karl Harding, from Harbour House, told magistrates at the first hearing that the application was misrepresented to the licensing committee. He said the evidence heard at the council’s committee was for a separate event run on a temporary event notice, not the current trading licence.
The event in question was in July last year, for which the venue received a formal written notice, with the threat of further enforcement action, after causing ‘significant disturbance’ to residents. The council’s committee heard how the event had a bass level, recorded at a nearby property at 01:00, higher than that recorded at the closest residential property to the Isle of Wight Festival.
The extension to licence would help the business grow and improve facilities for customers, said Mr Harding. However, the committee felt it had been persuaded by the evidence that no conditions could be applied to mitigate the harm caused.
Speaking at the first hearing, Edward Elton on behalf of the council, said the authority opposed the appeal.
Evidence will be heard from both Harbour House and the Isle of Wight Council later today and Magistrates will determine whether to approve the licence
I think if they reduced their prices a bit, they should be allowed to stay open until 3am.
I think people need to look at what it was like years ago on the island it’s a mess now and there’s nothing for holiday makers and the council are bent and what to make it all house for more trouble let it go ahead and if it’s that bad close it give them a chance to make some think it’s like the party on the grass each year what’s wrong with that it’s not been closed car boots gone now ice-rink gone so what do you what people to come and see fights and kids being hurt think people

Isn’t that like most badly run and failing businesses like this. These businesses should be closed if they keep making a noise especially if after closing time, after closing time just call 999 as then it becomes anti social behaviour. Get an incident number and if it continues keep calling.
Myself I do not see a need for another late night licensed premise in Ryde. Sadly customers will hang outside, drinking, smoking and blocking pedestrians and cyclists right of way. Who would like the idea of trying to walk through a crowd of drunken people….? Then also the fact that6 there will be reuse thrown about and cigarette butts… Let alone the deep bass thumping in the background… (Why does every event have to have the deep bass thump so loud ??) BOOM>>>>BOOM>>>>>BOOM>>>>BOOM>>>> awful… and it travels great distance.. Not everyone’s cup of tea !!

To many old nimbys living along the sea front.
They seem to ignore the FACT that this a holiday Island and need to accommodate everybody.
Not just old people and young families.
It all helps the local economy.
After all, Ryde is known as the party town of the Island.
Far too many old people/retiring people movig here who don’t spend money, whilst OUR youngster’s have to move to the mainland for a decent wage, and, dare i say it, decent NIGHTLIFE.
Just a question. Do you live anywhere near to this establishment? Also people that live near to this establishment have the right for their input.

Exactly. I know a few people that live nearby and the noise was way too excessive. Yes you’re right these same people work for a living and have the absolute right to complain. Been there years way way before harbour house came on the scene.

I’m 71 in October. Went to the recent festival along Fairlee road. Love Pink Floyd , Led Zeppelin . Just a few years ago went to Southampton to watch the Australian Pink Floyd Tribute band live. What a night. I’m certainly not an old nimby.
Don’t mind what they do but people block the pavement outside drinking when there busy and don’t think it’s good for families walking along there.Also other places that sell ice cream should not have a license to sell alcohol it them
