UPDATED: Police have sealed off part of Ryde Esplanade this morning (Friday) following the discovery of a hand grenade.
Bomb Disposal Experts from Portsmouth have been alerted to the find and are expected to arrive on the Island later this morning. In the meantime a cordon is in place on North Walk in order to protect members of the public.
Island Echo understands the device – described as being historic – was found well above high water and potentially on dry land, indicating it has been placed there by persons unknown.
Anyone who finds munitions or ordnance should call Police on 999.
UPDATE @ 09:12 – Bomb Disposal experts have successfully recovered the device, which has been confirmed as a genuine World War II hand grenade.
The grenade has been made safe, taped up and is to be taken back to the mainland to be disposed of.
North Walk has now re-opened to pedestrians and motorists.
