The Isle of Wight Council has now paid the national £150 energy rebate to 27,412 account holders on the Island – less than half of those eligible for the rebate payment – and warns it may take several more weeks for non-direct debit payers to receive their money.
The government is providing a £150 rebate to council tax payers in bands A-D (and E if in receipt of disabled persons reduction) to help with rising energy costs. This is a one-off payment and will not have to be repaid.
The council has made a total of 25,985 payments to direct debit payers — this equates to around 70% of direct debit payers — and 1,428 cash applications.
This represents just 49% of the overall 56,279 properties entitled to the rebate, meaning more than half are still patiently waiting for their money.
So far, £4,111,950 has been paid out to eligible households and payments continue to be made as swiftly as possible.
Letters are being sent to anyone who is eligible for the rebate and does not pay via direct debit. As there are around 18,000 accounts like this, it may take 3 or 4 weeks to contact all these cases before an application is even considered and payment is made.
The letter will contain an online code to complete an application form and provide the local authority with your bank details. Once they have received this, the Council aim to process your application ‘as quickly as possible’.
You are eligible to claim this payment if your property is in band A-D and:
- you are living at the address on 1st April 2022;
- the council tax bill was in your name on 1st April 2022;
- the rebate has not already been claimed by another household member;
- the property is not a second home or unoccupied.
on the other hand if you are late making a council tax payment, the council are very fast in sending a letter to inform you off the fact.
Still waiting , obviously the new all singing all dancing computer system hasn’t picked my name yet !
A bit like ERNIE!!!!!!
Can I claim interest ??????
taken from BBC news “If you don’t hear from your council, contact them to check how you can claim the rebate. You should contact them before the end of September when the scheme closes”
Well the arrogant attitude of the woman on the phone at the council, “Sonia” said they have until September until anything has to be settled, she quoted it was the government guideline. So they are sat on the money and not dishing it out yet.
I repeat from a previous article, as the council are going to write to us and know our names and address, just send a cheque.
No, way to simple! Dont forget, the council are not here for your convenience, its the other way round…
i am not giving bank details by letter or phone to the council send me a cheque
BUT once you do get your payment it is followed up by the most outrageous of letters basically telling you that if you lied to get the payment then you were guilty of fraud and they would be coming for you. Absolutely disgusting to send a letter blaming the recipient for what could only be the useless IWCs failure to check facts anyway. That says far more about the expected incompetence of the IWC author than it does about intentional fraud.
Totally outrageous that the department sending out payments has to prewar of it’s own uselessness.
The payment is automatic. The only way you would get the payment if you weren’t entitled to it would be if the property for which you received the payment is not your main residence.
Is that the case?
Well I live in a band E property (yes, it’s my only residence and I’m not disabled or claiming any benefits). So I was really shocked about two weeks ago to find that the £150 rebate had appeared in my account, followed not long after by the threatening letter in the post! I called the council only to be told “oh yeah, we’ve had quite a few of them go out in error to the wrong addresses” and I then had to go through the whole process of having to return it. Perhaps if less time was being spent sending payments in error to the ineligible, those who are still waiting might get theirs a little bit quicker?
Been paying our council tax by direct debit for ten years now and no sign of our “rebate”. Considering cancelling the mandate and withholding any further payment until they pay us what we are owed.
I’ve had my rebate already on my 7 rental properties, dont know what you’re all moaning about.
Then you are guilty of fraud. The rebate is paid to people who live in CT bands A to D that is your main home.
If your properties are occupied then it it your tenants who are entitled to the rebate.
If they are not occupied then nobody gets a rebate.

I think you’ll find that this is a joke, – you know? – humour?
Glad to see someone understands humour!
Did you have your sense of humour by-pass surgery on the nhs or did you go private? Either way it was an outstanding success.
Lol 🙂
The council, sends you a letter asking you to fill a form online to claim the 150. If for any reason you cannot do this you phone them up and they will do it for you. They refuse to send a cheque or post office voucher, like some other councils do. Once this is done it can take a few weeks to arrive into you account.
Thanks Boris, got the money. Spent it on a lovely meal and drinks. Cheers.
just a thought, would it not have been simpler and faster to just credit it to your council tax account?
Had an email asking me to verify my name as they can’t find it for my address, Been taking council tax out of my account as a direct debit for years, with my name shown with my address. They make hard by trying to cover their back. Still waiting for the money..
