With the Tour of Britain race now just weeks away, the Isle of Wight Council has confirmed which roads motorists will have to remove their cars from on the big day.
Organisers require roads to be free of cars to ensure the safety of riders who will be reaching speeds of around 40mph on sections of the course.
Residents will have to remove their vehicles by 18:00 on Saturday 10th September with parking restrictions remaining in place until the race passes the following day.
If motorists fail to remove their cars, the Council will forcibly remove the vehicles and they will be relocated to a safe place nearby. Residents will then need to ring the Isle of Wight Council to establish the vehicle’s location.

“This event will bring tremendous benefit to the Island in terms of raising our profile as a great place to live and visit, inspiring people to take up healthy outdoor pursuits and in allowing residents to see at close hand a top-class international sporting event.
“But there will inevitably be an impact — albeit a short-lived one — on the road network and we are asking Islanders to help us to move their cars away from the course to enable to race to take place as safely as possible.
“We realise this may cause some personal inconvenience, but I hope residents see the value of supporting the event and can make the necessary arrangements. Their co-operation really will be appreciated by all those involved in bringing this huge event to the Island.”

We also had a world class, off road, Motorcross event in arreton once but a few nimby’s got it stopped. I thought that’s what the island wanted, to raise the profile, but apparently not. At least they didn’t inconvenience road users.

Regardless of how badly someone else has parked, the only increase in danger is how the other motorists react. If you think it’s dangerous and beyond your driving capabilities then go a different way. If you think you can manage it without hurting yourself or others then carry on. There are always going to be inconsiderate drivers and bad parking but a confident and diligent driver will manage to the best of their capabilities. It’s all covered in your driving test and once you’ve passed you just get better at it every day you drive. At least that’s the understanding.
Clearly the IWC have not thought this through well ,if we only had to move for couple of hours that would be fine,but to expect thousands of car’s ( there’s not enough parking already) to be moved by 6pm day before. If vehicles are damaged/stollen are IWC going to pay ?. Could offer more free parking in school/Parks etc. If you don’t read IE or other media how will people know even. How many car transporter trucks have council contracted with who don’t have right Insurance etc,once they move vehicle they become legally liable for any damages theft etc.
Imagine how much money the Ferries will earn from this event !!! Next to nothing for the Island..

In my area they will park on the estate roads, bus’s etc won’t be able get through and traffic will back up onto race route!. I guess speed limits 20mph – will also be kept to by cyclist’s?. Are organisers also providing medical and ambulance cover? as these riders are not Islanders and prone to accidents.
If everyone affected just said “no” there would be literally nothing the IWC/police could do about it. Literally nothing – thousands of cars could not be moved in time, the resources just do not exist here. Just sayin
True, we are not talking about a dozen cars but thousands, where are they going to park and where do the council think they can tow them to nearby. If towing cars all night think police and IWC will get plenty theft/noise complaints. If they tow and then anything happens the IWC are responsible . Have the IWC checked with vehicle insurance bureau if legal to move vehicles and place them at overnight risk away from insured address?. This is a private cycle race for the rich , not essential road works or benefiting a community event like a Carnival. But I guess other counties have managed.

A few years ago we had a ‘big prestigious cycling event’ in Ryde. The roads had to be resurfaced to accommodate these super fast cyclists. Will the route of this race be resurfaced and has Island Roads been told!?

My family often see me as negative and bit of a misery but when I read these comments I realise I am nowhere near the class of the collection of misanthropic keyboard jabbers haunting these columns. It may be quite exciting to see the racing, and the precise way the rolling roadblock is managed. Just see it as a much expanded development of the Olympic Flame run, which went off so well ten years ago.
i would presume that all the existing (age old) potholes will be repaired by then? We don’t need more people taking legal action for damages against the council, as there is a large waiting list allready!
