Repairs to a skatepark in the West Wight will hopefully see it open in time for summer – after it failed a safety inspection.
The Moa Place Skatepark, in Freshwater, was unexpectedly shut last month after the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents deemed there were significant hazards. Freshwater Parish Council is coming up with a ‘cheap, temporary solution’ to patch it up as it agreed to submit plans to the Isle of Wight Council for a new skate park and pump track.
An inspector said the equipment may be beyond the point of economical repair after they found rotting ramps, lifting boards and surface wearing but the skatepark should be shut until it can be made safe.
Councillor Anne Bamford said the skatepark, which was the first on the Island and opened in September 2010, had come to the end of its life.
She said:
“All we are trying to do is really patch it up as cheap as we can as we won’t have to keep it for too much longer.”
Most of the damage has been caused, Council officers say, by wear and tear although Councillors raised fears of vandalism.
Cllr Brenda Hobbs said the council was only looking at keeping it for a couple of years but they have to have it open for the summer holidays, or the village would be chaos.
The Council has already set a budget for repairs to the skatepark, with which it will buy materials to fix problems and officers will donate their time to install them.
The Parish Council is committed to providing the new skatepark and on Tuesday (6th June) received a presentation from Gravity Engineers, the designers of the track.
The authority is funding half of the cost (£120,000) and looking to secure grant funding and sponsorships to cover the rest. Without planning permission yet, it cannot apply for grants.
If the green light is given, it could take between 10 and 12 weeks to construct the track and is expected to have a 30 to 40 year lifespan before any issues arise.

Get the parents to fund it from their overly generous tax credits or universal credit.
We fund 80% of the children on the Island via such benefits, and of course all get child allowance, so why should council tax payers pay again for something that only a few use, and a few will trash before long.
Shame of being poor has been replaced by an arrogance and a view that these people have rights to demand not only having their choice of bringing unafforded children into the world but then demand that ‘others’ pay for their entertainment too.
You bred it you entertain it as most of that money will be other tax payers funded anyway.
You live in a very strange world when you think anyone with a kid is a benefit scrounger.
ASK the parents if they claim working tax credits, and child tax credits, OR universal credits, and child allowance then?
They ONLY need to work 16 hours for an alleged ‘single parent. or total of 20 IF claiming to be a couple
They then get THOUSANDS added to their benefits by the above.
You need to know more working class people IF you truly don’t understand that most, unless earing OVER 50K a year claim these benefits at others cost.
Dingy life riskers don’t come for our weather. Our benefits and free rent, c.tax worldwide famous

“Cllr Brenda Hobbs said the council was only looking at keeping it for a couple of years but they have to have it open for the summer holidays, or the village would be chaos”
What a pathetic statement. Take a look around Cllr. The ‘village” is already in a state of chaos with constant vandalism, often aimed at the skatepark. (as well as the newly planted trees – all broken. The newly planted containers outside the memorial hall, all destroyed etc)
Perhaps that is why they are repairing it, as in if they don’t the little treasures won’t have anything to trash. Got to give them something to do, ain’t yah.
Remove the skate park, grass it over. Put the local brats under curfew and enforce it.
Watch the crime level decrease.
Oh, and it will probably be cheaper in the long run.
Cut ALL state paid benefit to the families of such children, THEN and ONLY then would the womb provider and sperm doner, as they are NOT parents, take action, for most only have kids as a income and a free roof and council tax easy life.
