Members of Cowes Men’s Shed were recently treated to a fascinating day of local history and discovery, thanks to a special visit from fossil hunter and metal detectorist Adie Butler.
Hosted at Storeroom2010’s Cowes Men’s Shed, the event saw Adie share his extensive knowledge of the Isle of Wight’s rich past, bringing with him an impressive personal collection of historical finds. Spanning eras from the Stone Age through to Roman, Saxon, Viking, Norman, Medieval and Tudor times, the artefacts gave members a unique opportunity to handle and learn about real pieces of the Island’s history.
Adie has spent many years exploring the Isle of Wight’s beaches, fields and cliffs in search of fossils, flints and archaeological treasures. His talk captivated the audience with stories, facts and insights into the geology and archaeology of the area.
Project Leader Adam has said:
“Adie’s passion and knowledge just shone through. He brought the Isle of Wight’s past to life in a way that was exciting, educational, and hugely enjoyable.”
Attendees were also able to ask questions, get fossil hunting tips, and even have their own finds examined. A particular highlight was Adie’s analysis of a mammoth tooth found on the Isle of Wight years ago by one of the members.
Of course, no Shed event would be complete without refreshments. A spread of cakes and sweet treats kept everyone going, with tea and lively conversation flowing throughout the session.
Long-time member Roberto Pascoe summed up the experience:
“It was absolutely magnifico! I learnt so much. It’s days like this that help make Cowes Men’s Shed such a special place. There’s always something going on, and it’s great for your wellbeing too.”
Cowes Men’s Shed, which now has 190 members – including 30% women – provides a safe, welcoming space for people to connect, learn skills, and support each other. Activities range from woodworking and arts and crafts to gardening and social events, all aimed at boosting mental wellbeing, reducing isolation and encouraging creativity.
The Shed is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 15:00, and new members are always welcome.
