The former Kingswood activity centre in Bembridge has gone on the open market – with estate agents promoting the 60-acre site as a ‘development opportunity’.
The property comprises a mixture of accommodation and learning facilities as well as outdoor activities including a high ropes course, an abseil tower and zipwires, as well as an obstacle course, 3G swing, a problem-solving area and a low ropes course.
It was in January this year that the outdoor activity and residential centre suddenly closed its doors following the collapse of its parent company, Inspiring Learning Group.
The site at Hillway Road was once Bembridge School, which taught children aged 9-17 until it closed its doors in September 1997. The land was then acquired by Ryde School with Upper Chine, with the private school utilising the site for boarders whilst leasing the remainder to Kingswood.
Thousands upon thousands of children – both from the Isle of Wight and the mainland – have enjoyed residential trips to the centre over the past 3 decades, but what the future now holds for the educational facility is unclear.
The land is being sold by Ryde School on a freehold basis with vacant possession, and includes part of the beach below. No asking price has been given.
Savills, who are marketing the property, say that it may be suitable for alternative uses, subject to planning permission.
