A Sandown seafront hotel which was previously handed a 1-star food hygiene rating by Environmental Health inspectors back in June has bounced back.
Following a recent visit from the Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health team, Hotel Maria, on Culver Parade, has now been awarded a 5-star ‘Very Good’ rating.
Speaking in September, the hotel vowed to improve and make changes after concerns were raised over a number of failings, which resulted in a ‘Major Improvement Necessary’ rating. Those problems included ineffective monitoring of stock control, incomplete cleaning records and a gap in the wall above the handwashing sink which was feared may be an access point for pests.
A spokesperson for the hotel, speaking in September, said since the inspector’s report was published, bookings had been cancelled.
Work has since been completed to address the problems and staff have carried out training on food hygiene, health and safety. The improved rating has been hailed as good news by the hotel.
In their latest report, officers found the management of food safety and hygienic food handling ‘good’ as well as ‘very good’ cleaning and condition of facilities and buildings.
Inspectors only found 2 issues when they re-inspected the venue, 1 being with paperwork and the other with clothing.
Overall, the hotel scored 10 out of 80 — with the lower the score, the better the hygiene rating — ensuring a 5-star food hygiene rating.

Unfortunately people do not forget.
Not a place I would recommend.
At least Premier Inn are clean, one turn off though
seeing all the Premier Inn staff standing outside smoking or Vaping
Not a good look.
Surprising how many food outlets do have people smoking and vaping outside, must admit that puts me off also – mainly because you cannot guarantee they wash their hands before serving, and smell from both “comforters” is not pleasant.
I too do not like this.
Some establishments if you pay attention you actually see them go inside and start serving without washing their hands.
This Pandemic as not taught many people cleanliness.
Vaping and smoking isn’t good
A fearsome lot, environmental health and rightly so.
If it managed five stars now how come it couldn’t before. . I had friends come down on a coach party from Scotland and we were absolutely disgusted. Now all of a sudden it’s five stars. Check it again in a year…. I don’t believe these places that are so substandard and then they turn it all around after being inspected, it certainly should ring warning bells.
They only inspected the kitchens.
Well done! The obviously much needed improvements are welcomed. But why did it take a visit from Environmental Health for this hotel to realise just how bad things were?
The Manager, the Chef even the staff, did they not see and understand how bad everything was? Obviously not
Well done keep it up.
Need to send people to go help the breeze at island harbour get a better rating mind you with the rats both 2 and 4 legged outside there’s not alot that can be done here
