The Cowes Floating Bridge will undergo planned maintenance next Thursday (22nd September), which means the East Cowes-Cowes service will be suspended for around 20 hours.
The Isle of Wight Council says that the service will be halted from just after the school run at 09:30 and will remain grounded until 05:00 the following day (Friday).
The work will include replacing 2 broken glazing panels, any essential minor repairs, as well as checks and inspections undertaken using contractors and Isle of Wight Council technical staff.
The planned works are not related to any of the previous issues related to the vessel.
Councillor Phil Jordan, Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure, has said:
“We are mindful of our responsibility for the upkeep of council assets to the best possible standards and to carry out those works it does necessitate taking the Floating Bridge out of service for a short period amounting to less than a day.”

Is that the same Cllr Phil Jordan who proclaimed several months ago that an agreement regarding compensation from mediation between the Parties on the defective Floating Bridge No 6 would be announced imminently ? We still have not heard anything, but equally we would not be surprised whatever value was agreed it would then not be disclosed however small due to “commercial reasons”. Still, it all helps towards offsetting over £1,000,000 being spent on the Pusher craft to assist the Floating Bridge No 6 which cannot operate at various states of the tide without such assistance from another craft.
It is me, or do the Floating Bridge use any excuse not to run? Staff sick, planned maintenance, Covid. It’ll be the half term holiday and Remembrance Week next.
