Foot and cycle passenger charges on the Cowes Floating Bridge will now begin on Monday 27th July, a week later than expected.
Originally charges were expected to commence today (Monday 20th), however, due to delays in the supply of new equipment, this start date has been postponed by one week to allow adequate time for staff to become fully trained.
A 40p return charge will be implemented next Monday, however travel will continue to be free for concessionary bus pass holders and those aged under 19.
Tickets will initially be available from staff located in both Cowes and East Cowes, although this will remain under review following the introduction of the charges and a mechanised system will be introduced in February 2016.
Later this year a smartcard style system will be put in place and those with a card will be able to continue travel for the 40p return. Charges for those not obtaining a smartcard will rise to 70p return as announced earlier this year.
Isle of Wight Council Executive member for economy and tourism, Cllr Shirley Smart, said:
“This slight delay in implementing floating bridge charges is necessary to ensure that there are minimal disruptions to users and that a good level of service is maintained.
“We need to ensure that our staff feel confident in administering the new processes before they are rolled out to the public.”
