Fire crews have rushed to the derelict Ocean Hotel in Sandown this evening (Monday) following reports of a fire. Crews from Sandown, Newport and the Aerial Ladder Platform from Ryde were called to the scene shortly after 19:00, with officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary joining them quickly after. Firefighters have used ladders to gain access to the 2nd floor of the property where it is believed the fire has been started. Island Echo readers have reported seeing no flames, but instead smoke issuing out of broken windows and doors on the High Street side of the abandoned premises. The smell of smoke is filling the evening sky. Over the years, the Ocean Hotel has caught fire numerous times and is now a common hang-out spot for squatters and vandals. It is understood that High Street is blocked to all traffic whilst firefighters – extracting water from nearby hydrants – work to extinguish the blaze. As a result, Route 3 Southern Vectis buses are diverting locally. The cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.

Demolish it,nothing to set fire to then.
Knock it down, save fire fighters wasting time, and and attending real emergencies
secure the site properly for once needs 24 hr security….. rough sleepers and youth culprits.
Yep a rundown drug haven town full of derelict hotels and empty shops. And they say have a holiday there. Now let me think about that. No thanks
Doesn’t look good for Holidaymakers to see.
Either the Hotel needs to be demolished to make it a safe place
or the Hotel owners should pay for 24/7 security.
This is getting embarrassing now and I feel sorry for
the Emergency services having to waste their time
attending to such events.
Time that building was pulled down, enough is enough…
The council should buy it for £1 under a compulsory purchase order and then demolish it. It’s a stain on the island and Sandown in particular.
Totally agree. Turn the space into a sitting garden area.
Mind you that would just give the vandals something else
to destroy.
Catch the little sods and give them a good public birching. This country is too soft, that’s why it happens.
You must tell us what law allows councils to compulsory purchase a building for only £1.
Normally they have to pay the current value but using your internet legal degree you can show us where you get this £1 price from.
one might think that the squatters would keep the vandals out. Why live there and end up burnt?
Next time lads don’t rush. Maybe the whole edifice will go up and will then need pulling down
Put a couple of secret cameras up catch the culprits red handed
