Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to 2 trolleys on fire in Oakfield, Ryde this evening (Sunday).
1 appliance from the nearby Ryde Fire Station was called to Oakfield High Street – next to the Premier store – at around 17:40 following reports of 2 shopping trolleys full of cardboard on fire.
While the fire appliance was dealing with the incident, Southern Vectis’ Route 2 buses were unable to serve Harding Road and the High Street due to the appliance blocking the road.
Firefighters used 1 hose reel jet to extinguish the burning cardboard before standing down and returning to their home station.

Most of the Oakfield population are decent law abiding citizens. I bet where you live also has it’s minority of scumbags!
Shame the little shits who thought it was funny to set fire to the trolleys weren’t sitting in them. Shame the perpetrators couldn’t be found and made to pay for the two trolleys they distroyed. If they couldn’t pay up, take away something they own that is very dear to them, Xbox, PlayStation, mobile phone….

I assume they are referring to a couple of shopping trolleys. Since these are made of steel and were full of cardboard, I would suggest it was a fairly well-contained fire. Why does it need a fire engine to put it out? Either toss a couple of buckets of water on it to try and douse it or just let it burn itself out. Not much riskier than a barbeque, in my opinion. Seems a waste of resources but maybe the fire service felt it needed a bit of practice.
There seems to be quite a lot of unneccessary calls to emergency services of late.
Have to agree with that, although maybe the local residents were scared they would have their windows put through or something?
