The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are still looking to recruit retained firefighters for the East Cowes, Bembridge, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Freshwater and Yarmouth areas.
The men and women who work as on-call firefighters provide the Island’s retained duty system (RDS), an essential part of the emergency service. They can come from every walk of life and include shopkeepers, builders, plumbers, farmers, secretaries, engineers and directors of companies, together with people who are not currently employed.
You don’t need previous experience as the Service provide a comprehensive training programme. What is important is that you are enthusiastic and can meet certain essential requirements, including fitness and medical. Crucially, you must be able to reach the fire station quickly and safely within 6 minutes after being alerted to an incident by pager.
On average, you could be called out two or three times a week for one hour. If you can’t be available all of the time it’s not a problem; the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are particularly keen to hear from people who are available during weekdays and weekends. You will also be required to attend a training session each week.
Successful applicants will be required to attend a Safe to Ride Course which will be 12 days in duration between 16th-27th November 2015. If successful in completing this course, applicants will also be required to attend a Breathing Apparatus Course which will be of a similar duration within the subsequent 12 months.
In return you will be well paid and receive thorough training enabling you to achieve a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) licence, a certificate in First Aid, plus all there is to know about emergency situations.
