A fire has ripped through a boat on the River Medina this evening, leaving the vessel burnt out in the low tide.

Two pumping appliances from Newport Fire Station were called to the scene at Newport Quay shortly after 18:20 following reports that two persons were trapped inside a boat, which was well ablaze.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus climbed onto the burning vessel to establish if anyone was inside. Thankfully, the wooden boat was declared empty.

Coastguard teams from Newport also attended the scene to assist the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

Two male occupants of the boat, who have now been made homeless, are being supported by the British Red Cross this evening to find suitable alternative accommodation.

It is not known at this time what caused the fire. Police have closed Little London road while investigations are carried out.
