Firefighters from Ryde, Newport and East Cowes have attended 2 separate fires in the open this evening (Friday).
A single crew from Ryde were mobilised to Pondcast Lane, Havenstreet at around 18:50. The wholetime crew discovered that a bonfire was well alight but no action was required. The appliance left the scene just 10 minutes later.
Less than 30 minutes after the first call out, 2 appliances from Newport and East Cowes were mobilised to a fire within woodland at East Cowes Esplanade.
The small, unattended fire was extinguished with crews on scene for around 30 minutes.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service say they are attending a lot of calls to bonfires/controlled burning at the moment. Islanders are being encouraged to find alternative ways to dispose of garden/DIY waste.
If you do have to have a bonfire/controlled burn be considerate to neighbours and notify Fire Control on 02031 620063.
Wholetime crew ? seriously, I don’t suppose your ‘writer’ means ‘Full time’ crew
, but even that is necessary unless describing a ‘part time’ crew, because one would assume they were ‘full time’ unless otherwise stated.
‘Wholetime’ is the correct terminology to use when referring to the fire service. The service is made up of wholetime firefighters and retained (on-call) firefighters.

And they are, of course, correct. The hyphen was dropped some time ago, showing a further deterioration of the English language.
