A woman has been rescued from the water at Wightlink’s Fishbourne ferry terminal this evening (Wednesday).
The Portsmouth-Fishbourne service is delayed as a result of the emergency, which has involved Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor, Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Emergency services were first reported to be responding to the scene at 19:50, with 3 Coastguard vehicles rushing out of Ryde via Binstead towards Fishbourne – and ambulance crews inbound from Newport.
The casualty has been stretchered onto Cowes RNLI lifeboat and taken a short distance to a nearby pontoon for transfer into an awaiting ambulance.
Those waiting to travel to the mainland have described seeing the commotion as blue lights and sirens arrived at the terminal.
Wightlink’s Victoria of Wight car ferry was approaching the terminal when it suddenly stopped, before standing off at a safe distance. The ferry has now docked but the 20:00 from Fishbourne is delayed as a result.
It is unclear how the individual came to be in the water.
It is not thought that the incident is related to the ongoing search for a missing woman in the Ryde area.
UPDATE @ 21:15 – The woman has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment. Despite online rumour, she has not passed away.
The incident has been brought to a close.
UPDATE @ 22:45 – Cowes RNLI’s helm, Myles Hussey, has said:
“When we arrived we found she had already been pulled unconscious from the sea by members of the public and was on the shore just by the ferries’ linkspan”.
Another crew member, Dr Will King, started resuscitation procedures, soon joined by paramedics. Will said:
“It was very fortunate she had been spotted by members of the public, particularly with the added danger of being run down by the car ferry”.

I can’t see Bob’s comments to respond (as The Echo has probably taken it down) but from all the reaction it seems he has yet again upheld his reputation of writing an insensitive and baseless comment which is his trademark on a number of news articles. Maybe he should change his alias to ‘Knob’.
Or be removed from the group, sound’s like he is a key warrior trolling trouble maker.
This is why we have rescue services .. to help those in need. If this is indeed a mental health issue, it is just as critical an emergency as any other. Don’t be a douche.
“It is unclear how the individual came to be in the water.”
Hayey, did you not read that part of the report?
Until it does become clear, your comment is meaningless!
