Maintenance works at the entrance to Ryde Pier will affect access to evening ferry services over 4 nights in September. The work on the speed bumps will take place between 19:00 and 05:00 from Monday 2nd – Wednesday 4th September, and between 20:00 and 05:00 on Thursday 5th September. Island Roads has scheduled the work to avoid both the main holiday season and also the Network Rail maintenance work which will see train services suspended from Friday 6th September until May 2025. On the first 3 nights of the works, access to the pier will be maintained under temporary traffic lights and users of the Wightlink FastCat service are advised to allow more time for their journeys up and down the pier. On the last night of work, the road will be closed to vehicular traffic so passengers will have to either use the train services or travel along the pier by foot for the last 3 FastCat services of the day. A spokesperson for Island Roads has said:
“Timing the works overnight and outside of the main school holidays should greatly reduce the impact on the travelling public but we would nevertheless like to thank ferry users and Wightlink in advance for their understanding.”
How about timing it for after the last ferry has docked and the passengers gone?

And, here we are, about 28 months later, with maintenance and repairs being necessary already.
Does no-one question why this is happening so soon? Surely, someone must be held responsible for the substandard original work?
