2 new brand names – Evans Cycles and USC – look set to open inside the refurbished Sports Direct store in Newport.
Plans have been unveiled to get rid of the vacant stores next to Newport Bus Station.
At the moment, only 3 of the 5 retail units in the South Street retail building are occupied following the closure of Ponden Mill and Peacocks.
The big gap is currently partly occupied by Sports Direct, who have closed their regular shop on the first floor of the building for refurbishment.
Now, plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council revealing 2 new occupants of the enlarged Sports Direct store which would then extend as far as New Look. H&M also has a store in the block.
The new-look Sports Direct store will be on 2 floors and sales areas will be dedicated to clothing shop USC and Evans Cycles. Neither of the 2 stores currently have stores on the Island.
An application to the council is asking to alter the shop fronts and display of advertisements — as logos of sports brands Nike and Adidas will make up part of the look.
As part of the refurbishment, it is proposed the current entrance to Sports Direct, on South Street, will be replaced with some windows, using an entrance further down to access the escalators and merchandise.
what’s the point in that we already have a jd and a sports direct, we need bigger food chains or a primark etc if u rlly want franchises in the town
