Text messages to patients of an East Cowes doctors’ surgery, asking them to complete an ethnicity survey, are not a scam, the surgery has confirmed.
Despite rumblings on social media, the East Cowes Medical Centre, on Church Path, has been quick to confirm to its patients the text messages alerting them to the survey were indeed genuine.
In posts on social media, patients said they had had it confirmed from the practice it was not sent by them. However, a spokesperson for the East Cowes practice confirmed the text, containing a link to the survey, was sent by them.
The survey is necessary, they said, as the surgery carries out an equality impact assessment to ensure it has the right services for the area.
They said the text had gone out to around 400 patients who had incomplete records and they were just trying to fulfil their equality obligations.
Addressing the comments on social media, the spokesperson said they would be looking into where the information came from.

I fail to what ethnicity has to do with it, it is really simple if someone is ill then see and treat them, it is not rocket science.
Ethnicity does have a medical impact.
Sickle cell anemia, for example mostly affects people of African, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent.
It can also affect treatment. Some insulin is sourced from pigs, which is not kosher.
Many other examples, but knowing the proportion of ethnic and religious groups in an area is beneficial in determining healthcare requirements.
But you are supposed to have paid into the system to use it. I had to pay for treatment once in India so where is the parity.
So you are saying that a British “born and bred’ 18 year old who has an accident on his first day at work should be denied treatment because hasn’t “paid into the system” yet?
No, I saying that all indigenous people to the UK regardless of age are entitled to free NHS treatment. It’s the visitors from overseas who are expected to pay unless they are exempt. As the NHS state: If you cannot provide or obtain a valid EHIC, PRC or S2, you may be charged for your treatment. You’ll be charged at 150% of the national NHS rate.
You said nothing of the sort.
You said, and I quote:
“But you are supposed to have paid into the system to use it”.
“Indigenous people to the UK” who have not yet started work have not “paid into the system”.
And there are, literally, millions of people who are not “Indigenous people to the UK” who have paid substantially “into the system”.
Disgusting thing to ask people to fill in.
For IF we are all the same as authorities tell us we are, then clearly there is no need to fill in such questionnaire data.
But if we aren’t, then it will be to local peoples detriment to fill in such questions as the so far minority groups will gain a disproportionate amount of extra attention at the cost of the majority
So imo don’t fill it in
Ah, so they could prioritise services?
The survey is necessary, they said, as the surgery carries out an equality impact assessment
more woke drivel – they can find out what services they need by the patients that show up in the surgery – well, that is assuming anyone can get an appointment.
Try turning your brain on before spewing your usual far-right drivel.
As pointed out to “Reg Dennis”, people of different racial origins have different medical requirements.
And it works both ways. There is no point in spending a fortune on screening or treatment for a disease that is prevalent in a particular racial type if few of that type are living in the area.
Nothing to do with being “woke”.
give it a rest smiffy…we are bored of hand wringing do gooders inviting every sob story and sad case to the island to live off our taxes….if you want immigration here…you pay for it.
You have been told several times that the number of people under 65 on the Isle of Wight has been falling while the number of over 65s has been increasing rapidly.
You have even been told where to go to verify this fact (and it is a fact).
Of course, the state pension is classed as a benefit and it is paid for by the taxation of those in work, so I guess it is pensioners you are referring to as “sob stories”.
As for illegal immigration? You were told that Brexit would make it worse and it has. If you voted for Brexit you voted for more illegal immigration as you were told what would happen.
Stop blaming others for your poor decisions that are a result of your lack of intelligence and poor education.
Nice try smiffy – look around you- more and more non islanders arriving all the time that cannot support themselves and are making the queues for the doctors and hospitals/dentists longer – perhaps you should take some of your own advice instead of simply insulting others, after all, resorting to insults is a trademark of the loser in a discussion.
Yes. more and more non-islanders arriving all the time and most of them are well off pensioners. They are clogging up doctors surgeries and dentists because oldies need far more medical care than younger people (including the kind of young people you allude to) and are too tight to pay for the private medical and dental plans they can easily afford.
Better a well off pensioner putting money into the Island economy than an unemployed sponger. And although they may be comfortable financially, the cost of private medical insurance goes through the roof after you hit 60, and the proportion of pensioners able to afford it is small. And why should they have to pay for it anyway? They have been paying NI all their lives.
I’d rather be called a do-gooder than a nasty bitter and twisted old git.
Wait until you end up in a care home. That’s one place where there are plenty of immigrants.
They’ll be the ones spoon feeding you and wiping your backside.
You’ll have an absolute blast.
mike..
not one member of my family has ever been in a care home and I can trace that back over a hundred years at least. We take care of our own and pay for them, I might add, from our own cash reserves – not one of us ever claims any benefits at all.
and for the record, not one member of my family has ever needed spoon feeding or having their backsides wiped by someone else, even into their 80’s and 90’s
Ebola etc. rings a bell.
More NHS money being wasted on wokism. The diabetic nurse was off for months with no replacement, the podiatrist has been off for months with all appointments cancelled and you stand no chance of getting to actually see a GP at this woeful “health centre”. It should be shut down.
FFS. More ‘tick-box’ nonsense. If we really want a world where everyone is treated equally, we need to stop organisations like this wasting time and money trying to ascertain the ethnicity of their clients. They are all human, aren’t they? If they are sick or unwell, help them. That’s what you are there for.
Perhaps the ethnic patients aren’t actually allowed free treatment, hence the reason for an ethnicity survey.
Many years ago I lived on the mainland and had to apply for a grant. The local council sent me a form saying that they were committed to unbiased equality etc and will I fill out a form to tell them what ethnic group I belonged to. I sent the form back blank with a note which basically asked why they would need to know if they were committed to unbiased equality. I didn’t get the grant…..but my Asian next door neighbour did. Nothing has changed. Everyone has to be “woke” these days. No room for white, heterosexual, meat-eating, able-bodied men. We have become unemployable outcasts!
