Firefighters are tackling a car fire in the middle of Newport this morning (Saturday).
1 wholetime appliance from Newport Fire Station is on the scene at Drill Hall Road, where a VW Polo has caught alight whilst stopped at a busy set of traffic lights.
Breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet are being used to tackle the fire, which appears to have broken out in the engine bay of the ageing vehicle.
The road has been closed in both directions.
UPDATE @ 11:10 – The fire has been extinguished and the vehicle moved off the carriageway.
The occupants of the hatchback – a woman and child – have escaped injury.
UPDATE @ 11:15 – The road has now re-opened in both directions, with Newport’s wholetime crew standing down from the incident and returning to station.
Glad occupants are ok. Why add “ageing” to the car description?? Being old doesn’t mean not serviced.
Hope all concerned with this incident are OK….
It must have been very frightening, especially with a child in the vehicle..
I think seeing as we have done recently re car / tractor fires , it is worth investing in a fire extinguisher, they are very cheap and easy operated ,plus it will give you peace of mind and could save a much worse incident for you or some other person….
