Rookley-based Betapak has invested in new technology to provide Island businesses with a locally manufactured, sustainable packaging solution that helps them reduce cost and their carbon footprint, whilst also driving eco-friendly customer loyalty.
Whilst businesses and their customers want products shipped safely, they don’t want to grapple with the issue of packaging waste to achieve that. With this in mind, Betapak has invested in specialist equipment that allows it to now manufacture its own biodegradable loose fill packaging.
Named ‘EcoFillPak’, it is an extremely eco-friendly product made completely from starch, is lighter, water-soluble and 100% compostable.
Jon Carter, Managing Director of BetaPak, comments:
“This investment has been made specifically with the aim of eliminating all plastics from our extensive packing lines, making a positive impact on the planet while still providing the best packing experience for customers to ensure their products arrive safely to their customers.
“EcoFillPak is a highly practical solution for loose fill that any business can change to now. It is also lighter, reducing weight and delivery cost, saving businesses money whilst also reducing their carbon footprint. Buying from us as a local manufacturer further reduces transport cost and delivery miles in addition to supporting the islands economy.”
The new machine is powered by 77 solar panels on the roof of Betapak’s offices and warehouse complex.
The surge in online shopping and businesses shipping to more destinations than ever before has resulted in unprecedented volumes of product packaging flooding into homes and further exacerbated the landfill and environmental crisis. The traditional foamed loose fill plastic used by many is non-biodegradable and takes decades to decompose, adding to micro plastic pollution. Added to this is the high carbon footprint of large lorries travelling to the Isle of Wight to deliver conventional plastic loose fill, which can be eliminated by this now being manufactured locally, on the Island.
Great product from Betapak , the sooner polystyrene p[ackaging l is consigned to history, the better.
I hope businesses support this product. The weight saving , water solubility and fast degradation time is a win win win.
We use this product. Smells of oily chips somewhat, but that is a pleasure, it’s not unpleasant. Recommended.
Give us a try 🙂
Thanks for the comments here
Fantastic work. Just hope the NIMBY lot don’t get wind, they will being trying to shut it down. Can’t have someone building a business on the island.
Well done. As already said, polystyrene is a nightmare!
Just one thing though- looks like an awfully big polythene bag the product is in!! Oops.
Bags are made from currently over 30% recycled material – This will improve further over the coming months
We are looking at a “reuse” bag option , plus reusable card options
This is all part of a journey and we will continue to improve – massive steps currently taken
Well done and all the very best for a bright and cleaner future..
What an excellent idea – I hope it succeeds and sees the end of polystyrene and plastic packaging.
So, it is water-soluble and 100% compostable – but is it “poppable” like bubble wrap. If Betapak can do that then this will certainly take the world by storm (although hopefully it will anyway).
