A traffic marshall at a car boot in Sandown has sustained a suspected fractured hip and a leg injury after being mowed down by a 4×4, sparking a Police investigation.
Police were called to Scotchells Brook Lane – the entrance to Sandown Airport – shortly before 11:30 this morning following reports that a man in his 50s had been involved in a collision with a car.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service was also called to the scene and conveyed the casualty to St Mary’s Hospital.
Hampshire Constabulary wish to identify and speak to the driver of a silver Mercedes 4×4 seen leaving shortly afterwards in the direction of Newport.
It’s understood that the driver of the Mercedes drove against the flow of traffic and collided with the local traffic management operative.
Police would like to speak to anyone who may have any information about or who witnessed the incident. This morning’s car boot was busy with a number of vehicles waiting to enter and leave the airfield. Did you witness the incident? Perhaps you have dash cam that may have captured the incident?
If you can help with this investigation then contact Police on 101, quoting 44210251289.

That’s awful. Wishing the person a speedy recovery.
Not the organisers or operative, seen it at other boot fair’s in past before Covid.
Moronic drivers who disobey parking operatives.
The driver when caught should face a heavy fine & prison time!
Obiviously didn’t think the rules should be followed!
Actually Arthur Sausage I think you will find that owners of 4×4’s do NOT have to follow the rules by law. Those rules only apply to poor people.
That reminds me of when I worked for Lady C, in the Midlands, she was outraged that the new policewoman had given her a ticket for parking on the yellow lines, in Her Own village! That policewoman soon got moved on.
This must be the work of, yet another Sloane Ranger! Coming over here in big motors, boot full of Waitrose grub, using their actual horns (which we seldom do as we know everyone’s name), and generally snarling things up: East Cowes being a prime example right now. Tax their unnecessary vehicles, tax their third homes, and tax their stupid little dogs they carry or push around in prams with pneumatic tires!
What the hell is wrong with people, hope they catch this idiot driver (that’s putting it politely), and impose a hefty fine and lengthy driving ban. Something needs to be done to make these stupid, ignorant people think about what they’re doing! Systems and rules are there for a reason! I wish the marshall well and hope he makes a speedy recovery.
These morons can’t wait 2 minutes. Obviously too arrogant to think ‘waiting to be instructed to go’ doesn’t apply to the 4×4 driver. Do the decent thing and go to Newport Police Station and face the consequences of your action. They surely must know they hit this poor man. Wishing him all the best for a speedy recovery, though his life is going to change for quite a while.
