A driver has fled the scene of a crash on Cowleaze Hill between Shanklin and Ventnor tonight (Saturday).
Fencing at the side of the carriageway has been destroyed and debris scattered as a result of a Honda Civic Sport careering off the road.
It’s understood the car was travelling downhill towards Shanklin when it veered off on a right hand bend. Trees prevented the car from travelling across a field, but instead spun the vehicle around and into fencing further down the hill.
No other vehicles are thought to be involved.
Police were called to the scene at around 21:30 but upon their arrival the driver had already left the scene. Officers remain on scene.
Enquiries are now underway to locate the driver. It’s unclear at this stage if any other persons were inside the car at the time of the crash.
The main road to and from Ventnor remains open, with traffic down to a single lane for a short distance.

Good thing another boy racer off the road bet he was drunk
That’s an appalling stereotype of the youth of today.
Have you no respect? Are you totally out of touch??
Far more likely to have been drugs….. Alcohol is so passe these days.
BOY RACER.. HE… There’s NO mention about the “driver” being male.
Yet another Crash on this once quaint Island!
I do hope there wasn’t a child in that car as there clearly looks like a child seat in the back!
TK, ‘the child’ is what PAYS for the drink, drugs, and car.
Without such, the driver would not be ‘entitled’ to a subsidised house and council tax, would not get £20pw per child in child allowance, would not get £130pw per child in child tax credits, would not get £50 per week in working tax credits IF they work.
So those having children are far better off themselves that those who don’t, yet those with, still whinge that they ‘can’t afford’ to feed them, despite all the above benefits, AND the amazing thing is, people on here don’t question it, and keep giving to food charities, saving the ‘parent’ or rarely parents, even more to blow on fast cars, drink, and drugs.
THINK, see it how it is, not how you are ‘told’ it is.
A bit too much of a generalisation…. But it reminds me of a chav on TV that was bragging she got £28 a year on benefits…
We can ONLY generalise without every individuals personal details, but such is ‘generally’ near the mark hence known as ‘generalisation’
Of course it might have been an upright citizen whose steering failed and a kind person then took them back to their home, and they forgot in their angst to phone the Police.
By the way unless in some remote part of the planet, I guess you forgot the ‘k’ after the £28.
Two can ‘play’ at being ‘picky’, YET it doesn’t alter what is going on.
That should have been £28 grand a year.
Take you’re own advice and THINK before posting such ill informed rubbish!
What qualifications do you have to dissmis anyone’s opinions?? or are you one of those antie democratic far left morrons that disagree with everything unless they agree with you!..
If you hate free speech, perhaps you should practice what you preach…
Gosh, joe seems to have hit a raw nerve here. IF the cat fits, wear it… and it seems to fit rather snuggly.
Fake comments… Regards, all. The Only Lady Dunstanding.
If the cat fits what? The cat flap?
Mrs Lovejoy,,,,,,,
Another idiot will be along soon….
He must be a non smoker I would guess, or would have torched it to hide evidence then blamed it on it being stolen once drugs drink out of system, with a witness set up to confirm his whereabouts that evening.
More news stories about car crashes than anything else……Must be that someone at the Echo has a feed from the Police.
Careful what you wish for, as soon, once the Island has been enriched as thousands more homes are built and filled, then petty car accidents will become trivial crimes and news.
Watch and learn, once it is all too late, and ruined, it will be not for a while, but forever.
