A driver who parked on a residential road in Ryde and hopped across the Solent to Portsmouth returned to find her car scratched and a rude note left on the windscreen yesterday (Tuesday).
The woman had legally parked on Monkton Street in the town before catching a ferry to the mainland, utilising the road’s close proximity to the Esplanade and cross-Solent connections.
When she returned later in the day, she discovered a handwritten note left on the windscreen alongside 2 deep scratch marks down the passenger side of the vehicle.
The note, which appears to portray a local resident’s disgruntlement at someone parking in ‘their’ street, read:
“Good morning!
“In future could you please be more throughful + not take up two parking spaces with your one car? Some of us live on this street and need to unload groceries etc. from our cars + take them to our homes. When you do this it makes it so much harder for us.
“Thank you!!!”
The situation has sparked discussion on social media about whether or not it is right for non-residents to park on streets where residents already find it hard enough to park.

I’ve been keyed/spray painted/wing mirror smashed just parking outside my own house during the years. The world is full of lovely people, not really news, common occurrence.
All the people who have commented about park where you like obviously do not have a problem where they live. Probably all got driveways or residents parking. Try having two or more young kids a car full of shopping and it’s peeing down with rain and you can’t park within half a mile of your own house! It’s not too much to ask people to park considerately and not take more space than they need. If you can’t parallel park you shouldn’t be driving or use a car park.
Everyone pays the car tax & insurance can park where like why pay in a car park when the streets are free
I’ve looked on the deeds to my house and nowhere does it say I own the road outside my house! Most people however, think they do.
