Motorists on the Isle of Wight have this week been experiencing issues with the availability of diesel at filling stations across the Island.
Tesco in Ryde locked up all of their diesel pumps on Wednesday evening and were only supplying customers with petrol – a move that was later followed by Morrisons supermarkets and other smaller stations such as Fairlee Service Station, Lushington Hill Garage and Northwood Garage, among others.
Isle of Wight Fuels, who supply the Island through their depot in East Cowes, has confirmed to Island Echo that a problem was identified with the diesel earlier this week resulting in disruption to the supply to customers. A spokesperson for the company has said that diesel is once again widely available, however refused to disclose the reason behind the initial shortage.
The Isle of Wight Council were informed of the situation and in a statement issued to Island Echo today (Friday) a spokesperson has said:
“It is the responsibility of IW Fuels to notify key stakeholders, including the Isle of Wight Council, in the event that there could be disruption in the supply of fuel to the Island; which they did this week. However, the potential disruption to diesel fuel supply has not materialised and, therefore, has not required any formal Multi Agency arrangements to be invoked.
“IW Fuels has coordinated alternative supplies to maintain diesel stocks and the major commercial contracts on the Island have arranged their own contingency supplies.
“Multi Agency Partners maintain robust arrangements, so that in the event of major fuel supply disruption, they can continue to maintain their critical services”.
Tesco Ryde remains without diesel, however a delivery is expected tomorrow (Saturday).
