Police on the Isle of Wight have issued a Community Protection Warning Notice on the owners of yet another derelict building in Sandown.
The building, located at the junction of Fitzroy Street and Station Avenue, has been used as a base for offenders to commit crimes and Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) in the area.
To prevent escalation, Police have taken the unprecedented move of securing the building using Police boarding services – and will be sending the building owners the bill.
Not far from Fitzroy Street, the perimeter around the much-maligned Ocean Hotel has now been secured with boarding following significant engagement between the owners and Police following the issue of a Community Protection Notice earlier in the year.
As a result, Police have since seen a significant drop in incidents at the location and continue to support those in the planning services to bring a long-term solution to this site.
A spokesperson from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“We have been working closely with our partners in Housing and diversion Services to deal with reports of street drinking and linked criminality. Refreshed non-drinking area signage is now in place and we have been utilising our powers to remove and destroy alcohol from offenders in these areas.”

They should knock it down……and build a new town in its place.
The council regeneration plans are exceeding all expectations – just a few more sustainability net zero initiatives, some extra double yellow lines and a few more diversity coordinators and Sandown will be transformed into an eco paradise!
A compulsory purchase order should be put into place by the Council at a low price and sold to a reputable developer , this could be applied to many neglected buildings in the island.
These eyesores should not be allowed to blight neighbourhoods.
I’d love the developer to have a clause in the purchase which states once the building is fit for purpose and available to sell, they can only sell it to Caulkheads. Furthermore, the sale price is discounted for first-time buyers from the Island. There aren’t any affordable properties nowadays due to Maggie giving Council tenants a right-to-buy, yet, the monies received were not used to build replacement new homes.
Are you high? None of this would ever happen in the real world. There are plenty of affordable properties on the island if you take a look on Rightmove. They might not be where you want to live but you can only buy what you can afford. But don’t ask for freebies or discounts just because you don’t earn enough to buy the house of your dreams. Get a second job or a better paid job like most of us did.
The issue is the council forced this situation in first place by not allowing development. Well done police about time you made and effort to prevent crime ( you are paid to serve and protect as well) . Prevention everyone with common sense is better for everyone and many times cheaper for tax payers.
