A cyclist is receiving treatment following an incident on The Middle Road near the junction with Broad Lane this evening (Tuesday).
Reports suggest that a man has been thrown from his bicycle but it is not yet apparent if any other vehicles are involved.
Island Echo understands that the cyclist is currently receiving treatment.
Traffic has built up at the site of the incident and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are in attendance at the scene.

Not a lover of cyclists but hope the rider is ok.
I 2nd that.
I drove past some cyclists last week in Freshwater on my way to a job
why cyclists always cycle in groups side by side
causing an obstruction to motorists amazes me.
The Law should clamp down on such behaviour
Think Van.
An overtaking manoeuvre should be done going fully to the other side anyway, and if they’re riding side by side it means you have to spend less time doing that manoeuvre.

How should I overtake a cyclist?
As with horse riders (and motorcyclists), make sure to give at least the same room as you would do car.

It’s actually safer for you as you spend less time doing the unsafe manoeuvre.
If you think you don’t have enough space to do a PROPER overtaking – then DON’T DO IT!
I agree. If only they got A Job.
Then they could get a car…
And if they have eyesight good enough, and plenty of other health requirements, and if they’re above the age of 17.
And if it makes sense economically…
…most trips in UK are under 5 miles: bikes can do that easily and keep you fit in a country of growing bosoms ;)))
And instead of giving your hard earned money to car manufacturer CEO, you can spend it on whatever else! Good wine, horse riding, holidays. On average in UK that’s £3000 a year more to do whatever you wish!
I saw the poor man being treated on the road – hope he’s ok. Thanks and well done to the drivers forming a protective cordon and directing traffic.
It’s about time the Isle of Wight Council invests in proper cycle paths and routes in the West Wight, all 3 major roads are dangerous for and because of the increase in cyclists coming to the island.
that island has all them fields can they not keep to them. that will keep the roads free from cyclists bloody things
Although we have a brilliant track that goes from Newport through to Cowes and not a single one of them use it, I think they would rather toy with death due to ego and entitlement.
I hate to say it, bit I am enclosed to agree. I have also been put at danger when walking on the path! Where they come so close. The electric ones are impossible to hear sometimes. I was stopped at the age of 12 by a police officer for riding my bike on the path, is that legal now?
Hmm? Plenty of people use RST. But it’s more of a tourist attraction and a commute path if your destination is Newport itself. Anywhere else along the way and you have to get on the main road anyway. Its not like RST goes directly through the businesses you may want to visit.
Also, what entitlement? They have the exact same right to be on the road as pedestrians, skateboarders, horse riders, car drivers etc.
‘not a SINGLE one of them use it’… quite simply not true is it! plus, while being an asset to cycling, not all of it is ‘brilliant’, some of it is a rutted and sometime flooded ‘farm track! .. and that is an accurate statement.
I hope the cyclist is not too badly hurt. Its not clear if a car was involved or any other form of transport. Safety suggestion for cyclists, please wear something bright and not all in black as seems to be the fashion, probably not contributory in this instance, BUT, you guys can completely disappear in the shadows from roadside trees etc.
Not a go at cyclists, just a safety concern.
Totally agree…I’ve just taken up recreational cycling & wear all hi-viz gear. I just cannot understand how many cyclists do not even wear a helmet and think they safe!
it should be compulsory to wear a helmet if cycling – it is if you horse ride even if you just are walking/trotting in a enclosed school which is much safer!
So… how many cycling deaths in Netherlands where almost no one wears a helmet?
Did some studies show benefits of cycling outweigh the risk from not wearing helmets given how many people would be put off riding if they had to carry helmet everywhere with them? Because I’m pretty sure it was the case.
(Also horse is a much bigger fall, and you can have a 800kg animal kick you in the head if you fall forward. Helmet is much more needed for horse riding than casual cycling.)
A jogger, a kid, a mailman, a mobility scooter user or anyone else can disappear equally as well.
What we need is pavements, cycling tracks and safety. Right now we have many roads that allow 50mph with bus stops in bushes and no crossings or pavements in sight.
Why mix foot and cycling traffic with car traffic?
Newport is the worst offender with its city centre: mixing thorough (the worst kind) type of car traffic with city centre that has cramped pavements because space for car parking on the road is more important than people, and then everyone is surprised at accidents.
Keep human size to human size, and giant metal boxes with giant metal boxes.
When are we getting safe cycle paths???
That sounds like two places ??
A road user is injured and SOME people use it as an excuse to denigrate cyclists! Please, please, exercise some decorum and simply wish the fellow a speedy recovery.
