Police, fire and ambulance crews are in attendance at a crash on Middle Road near Calbourne this evening (Friday). The incident, which occurred shortly before 17:55, has blocked the road between Calbourne Mill and Chessell. It’s thought that the occupant of 1 vehicle is trapped in the wreckage, with firefighters from Newport and Freshwater working alongside paramedics to extricate them. Passersby say that the crash appears serious in nature. Motorists are being diverted locally with the road closed in both directions. UPDATE @ 20:00 – Police say that the road is likely to remain closed for ‘some time’. It’s understood just 1 vehicle has been involved with social media commentators suggesting icy conditions could well have played a part in the crash. UPDATE @ 22:10 – Middle Road has now reopened in both directions, Police have confirmed. 1 person has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
