The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner, recently held a meeting with a senior representative from the Post Office about the future of their branch in Cowes.
The Post Office was located in the Co-Operative store in Terminus Road, but this has now closed and the building is being fitted out to re-open as Marks and Spencer. The Post Office is currently located in the car park to the rear of the building.
During the meeting the Post Office revealed that an alternative location was under active consideration, but it cannot be made public at this time for reasons of commercial confidentiality.
Mr Turner said:
“I have been contacted by a number of constituents expressing their concern over the closure of Cowes Post Office in Terminus Road. It is of fundamental importance for many residents of Cowes, and particularly elderly residents, that there is a Post Office in a convenient and central location.
“Last month I wrote to the chief executive of Marks & Spencer, Marc Bolland, to ask him to retain the Post Office on its existing site which is now owned by his company. Unfortunately he wrote back saying that was not an option, although agreement had been reached that the Post Office could operate from their car park for a period of some months while negotiations about an alternative site are underway. I am therefore pressing the Post Office for a satisfactory conclusion, and for this to happen with all possible urgency.”
The Post Office confirmed that they are committed to maintaining a Post Office service in Cowes but have not yet confirmed when a long term solution for the service to continue will be in place.
