An Isle of Wight Councillor refused to stand for a minute’s silence in remembrance of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at a recent council meeting, it has been revealed.
Former chair of the council, Councillor Geoff Brodie, was rebuked from the public gallery during Wednesday’s full council meeting while telling fellow councillors why he would not stand.
Cllr Brodie expressed his condolences to the Windsor family for the loss of their mother but did not believe in the inheritance principle of the head of state and thought there was a mass of secrecy around it. He said he was not a monarchist nor royalist but recognised there was no doubt the Queen served the country and wider afield very well for 70 years.
Cllr Brodie also said were he in other parts of the country, he would be able to say more about how he really felt about the royalty but recognised there was overwhelming support for the Royal family on the Island.
He claimed polls show 25-35% of the population, and increasingly younger people, did not support the monarchy.
Councillor Ian Dore responded to Cllr Brodie, saying he respected his views but had to disagree with the statement about young people. Cllr Dore said he went to Green Park and saw a ‘sea of emotion’ with all the tributes left to Her Majesty, including lots of images created by primary and secondary school children from all around the world. He said:
“All I saw was love and affection for someone who did not ask to serve but she stepped up to the plate and did it well.
“If the youngsters can take something away from that I will bloody well stand for that.”
The council was marking the proclamation of King Charles III after the Queen’s death last month.
Councillor Daryll Pitcher said the Queen was a role model for many across generations and her influence reached far across the globe. He said:
“She set a standard with her utmost duty to the nation that everyone involved in public life should aspire to.”
Councillor Vanessa Churchman proposed the minute’s silence and said Queen Elizabeth II was in councillors’ hearts and minds.

Really not a news story, he’s right majority of young people just happy have a day off school, I watched it all etc but my 3 kids, like their friends just had lay in and on PS5 games !. Times are changing.
Perhaps Freddie, you could have been a guiding parent, and told them to watch to funeral (as you did), by explaining why you (and they) should watch it. You know, for her 70 years duty to country, the hostorical moment in time which wont be repeated. Leading by example is what I am ‘just saying’
Perhaps when the time comes your 3 kids should join the armed forces in order to gain respect for others, unlike their father.
How does that make them gain respect for others?- they do respect others and would not try influence others or bully because of their views and will help anyone in need etc. Join army ? like Russia or North Korea – yer, gain respect !. It’s a choice thing, doesn’t make anyone a bad person we have freedom in UK not a dictatorship. What’s put alot off was the over the top going on about religion and Christianity instead of her loss to her family. Unfortunately someone dies every second, many have changed the world for the better !.
Just about sums up today’s kids perfectly. They don’t live in the real world, virtual world for them. This is why they are so poor in oral conversation and communication, unless it’s text speak of course! God help the world.
Get off your high hoarse cx brodie and show some respect.
IMO the Royals should have asked Pipper to step up.
I would go to war 24/7 for her !
Agree .. but you can’t educate pork eh!
Well said Cllr Dore, that’s why this country is in such a state ,we need more patriotic people to be proud of our country and traditions . Whatever you think of the monarchy the Queen did a great job and I don’t care what people say about them being privileged nobody would want to swap places with them really!
Attention seeking tosser.
never been any different, loves the sound of his own ignorant voice but he obviously appeals to his like minded supporters.
Why has this even made headlines, the guy is a first class twat and an absolute idiot, as if anybody is going to listen to this grade one tosser.
It is because he is a first class twat and an idiot. These headlines will ensure more people are aware of just what a scumbag this attention seeking little moron is. No manners and no respect for either the Queen, the constitution of the UK, and decent people all round the world who stood and showed respect – whether they admired her or agreed that this country should be a Monarchy.
Many thousands of people around the Commonwealth put their personal beliefs aside for a couple of minutes – and quietly showed respect for the occasion. They will discuss the odd pro and many cons of keeping the Monarchy when the time is right.
Why couldn’t he.
So a typical republican, so called independent labour, that means he could not get elected if he allied himself to the socialists, lets remember that name at the next council elections, his lack of respect for someone who has done so much for this country shows he is not fit for public office.
Make sure this scum does not hold his seat next time. Kick him out
Just trying to be interesting but obviously brought up with a lack of respect
Omg , how totally attention seeking are you ????
Pillock and you wonder why no one respects you ????
Well our Queen was one of the most amazing women of our times….
But she was also a wife grandmother and great grandmother, …
Out of common courtesy you really should know how to respect everybody’s feelings !!!
Would it have hurt you 2 keep you’re mouth shut for 2 minutes ?????
Why kick off and make a song and dance about it .
PILLOCK total IDIOT ……
Respect you have to earn and you obviously have not……
He’s been a prat all his life and an oxygen thief.
Given the stinking attitude of the left, and the idiot that is brodie, why are we surprised?
He’s an extremist left winger. You are an extremist right winger.
You are both disgusting.
And you’re racist!
(There, have some lefty medicine)
Well said brodie
no one Is obligated tombe quiet because a member of someone else’s family dies
the lack of tolerance and ack of acceptance of others views by royalists is breathtaking
This Councillor has done himself no good whatsoever, he has a right to his opinion, but respect goes along way, he at the next election will need to stand for his seat in council, it is for the electorate to decide if they wish to be represented by him. The electorate also have the right to ask him to stand down with immediate effect. The choice is theirs.
I know where I stand, farewell Councillor.
Should be done for treason ignorant man should be sacked
IF what has been stated is correct 25 % -35% do not support the monarchy., simple deduction that means 65% -75% do support royalty, i do not see politicians having that sort of rating.
Independent Labour councillor, says it all and not fit for anything.
Maybe he was thinking of Andrew
He doesn’t have to pay respect if he doesn’t want to,
He might be ignorant and arrogant, but, it wasn’t a law that was passed down, so he didn’t have to adhere to the silence, none of us had to. I didn’t.
Lazy fat slug… have some respect for yourself if nothing else.
Brodie is obviously an uneducated badly brought up self important waste of breath.
I totally agree with what he did,if he doesn’t want to show respect why should he,it’s HIS choice & nothing to do with anyone else
This Brodie character seems to be a total arse. Every time you hear about him he’s being a dickhead.
How more times is this horrible individual going to bring the Island council into disrepute, he is an embarrassment and should stand down.
Well you made I OW island echo. But that’s it? You obviously have no respect at all??
Call yourself English, British, probably when it suits you? You should be ashamed of yourself?
You don’t have to be a Royalist, just have some decency and respect. What’s wrong with you man, probably rude and arrogant and self absorbed?
Well Brodie, that just about sums you up. When at council meetings you are representative of us , the electorate, and the majority of us wish you to show respect . In your own time and place do what you want, but when in County Hall, and being paid from our council tax, you represent us, so abide by the wishes of the majority or stand down.
He should of showed some respect what ever his thoughts were .
That’s what respectable people do when someone dies .
When you aspire to hold a public office there are times when you should put aside your personal views and support your colleagues, especially when showing a degree of respect for someone who has passed on, be it a Royal person or otherwise.
So Geoff is happy to accept a “Queens Award for Voluntary Service” for “Pan Together” but has a total disrespect for Her Majesty the Queen’s passing.
Resign forthwith “Councillor”
He does not believe in God and now he does not believe in the royal family.
Time he was kicked off the council for what use he is.
