Island residents are being urged not to arrive too early for bookings at the local tips following a recent spike in queues building up on the main roads – indicating that the booking system implemented during COVID is beginning to falter. For the second weekend running, the sites — especially at Lynnbottom — have seen queuing which has caused further delays down the road. This has made it both unsafe for other road users and added to delays in accessing the sites, the Council says. Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox, Cabinet member for waste management, has said:
“We know this time of year is busy as people take advantage of the spring weather and particularly the Easter bank holiday to tackle a spring clean. “This also coincides with the tourist season beginning in earnest on the Island so our roads are also becoming busier. I would urge residents to stick to the times they have booked and to not arrive too early, please.”
Natasha Dix, service director for waste, environment and planning, adds:
“Please stick to the time you have booked. If you don’t have a booking, you won’t be able to enter the site. You can check if traffic is busy in the area beforehand by visiting www.roadworks.org and plan your journey so you arrive on time. “We advise arriving no sooner than 10 minutes before your allotted time. The tips are also quieter from 3pm onwards so you have the option of booking at a quieter time if you wish, especially since the introduction of same day booking last autumn.”
You can book your time slot at the tip by visiting www.iow.gov.uk/waste. Lynnbottom HWRC is open 10:00 to 18:00, Monday to Sunday. Meanwhile, Afton Marsh HWRC is open 10:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays only.

Should’ve kept the price down for green waste bins down
They wouldn’t have this problem if they stopped ripping the people that pay their wages
Council should not charge anything for emptying garden waste bins. It is a ridiculous charge.
The council workers at the tip should use some common sense when queues form and just let the cars in. There is always space in the approach for a good few cars but the jobsworths manning the entrance like to have a little power trip. Clearly, people have booked so there will never be that many cars queued. Just use some sense and let them in.
And a likely reason why people are turning up early is that you have to set off early on journeys because you can never predict which roads will be closed by Island Roads for no apparent reason.
So we are still in Covid restrictions are we?
Ye another 10 years yet..blast them covids..
The appointment system has been in place for a couple of years now so there is no excuse for people to turn up without a booking. This system works well but I have sat behind people who have been turned away because they have just chanced their arm and then the staff get abuse for doing their job.
And this is the reason why fly tipping up on the island!GO BACK TO THE OLD SYSTEM.Whats worse, queues or fly tipping?
Queues definitely. Hopefully someone at the council reads your “all caps” message and takes heed!
And when you arrive with a trailer, don’t allow people without a trailer to park in the ‘trailer only’ location.
With the state of the roads and the volume of traffic, one always starts out early because it’s difficult to time a journey nowadays.
observation, too many people, too many cars.
Then open tip earlier, people are either at work or have other thing’s to do. Better open at 7am like used to . We pay more than enough in council tax and should be run by IWC and not to profit making company. Never get why we pay council for so many services only for lWC to pay someone else. Like me owning a café, employ a cook who then order’s Uber Eats in for my customers!.
Why can’t staff walk up road sorting traffic?. We pay for a person just to stand all day checking vehicles in – £25,000
Why should we pay for staff to move morons who cannot tell the time .The timing system works really well the
only problem is the thicko public
Simple solution. Reduce the number of booked slots for the first three times of the day= less cars queuing.
Well stop doing bookings its ridicules now.
It just encourages fly tipping.
This Island is soooo behind the times….move forward and cut the booking system.
If people arrive and its full they would go later, they are achieving nothing this way.
People taking advantage of the spring weather? I have standing water on my lawn….
Then open up the tip earlier and close later, as well as remove the booking system – make it so that you can effectively “fly tip” at the tip – in other words no bookings, no fees and open almost all day and night, like it used to be back in the 1990’s – there was virtually no fly tipping back then.
Just goes to show that the facility is not fit for purpose. The population on the island now far exceeds the ability and this will only get worse and worse as more houses are built.
I’ve booked time slots, say 10.00am, and when I get arrive, there’s a huge queue of cars waiting to get in. They all cannot have booked the same or nearest slots, so are they just turning up ADHOC with the staff just allowing them in.
I pay £2,000.00 a year plus Council tax and over £100.00 a year garden waste
charges.
Why should I take additional waste to the Tip.
Next I will be going to a restaurant and taking my own food along
They are having a laugh
Maybe it’s time the council did something about the traffic that build up outside McDonald’s every school holiday?
IW Council are useless and clueless when it comes to Road safety.
Until someone dies at this scene, the Numpty’s might do something about it
Where are traffic Police?!, do they not exist on this lawless Island!,
it is a disaster waiting too happen.
The Premises is UNSAFE and should he closed down with immediate effect.
They need a much larger site, they should move into the old Ice Rink
large enough car park and the Numpty’s who eat the stuff will be near the boating lake to
throw their rubbish out of their car windows.

Trust you to chip in with something irrelevant
Maybe open a couple of new sites up, it’s only shipping containers after all. There are plenty of people on the island who need the work.
Stop the booking system and go back to how it was.
We can all work out how to drive off if its busy and come back later.
We don’t need organizing by this booking slot system we are all grown ups.
Someone needs to monitor the queues, it really is dangerous when they are queued up ….
The other Sunday a horse box had difficulty in passing as you cannot see oncoming traffic, and that caused a tailback, every vehicle that has to pass the queue risks being involved in an accident….
Strange that the council don’t appear to be bothered about safety from queues for McDonalds in Ryde.
