Isle of Wight Council meetings have been halted due to the national mourning period following the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
According to government guidance, the national mourning period lasts for 10 days, from the day of Her Majesty’s death on Thursday 8th September until the end of the day of the Queen’s funeral on Monday (19th September).
During that time there is no requirement for businesses to shut but in terms of local government, local authorities are unable to count days of mourning within the period of notice. That means no summons or meeting agendas can be issued.
Due to that, the earliest the council would be able to issue either a summons or meeting agenda would be on Tuesday, 20th September. The council is also required to publish an agenda at least five working days before the meeting.
In that instance, the earliest a council meeting could now be held by the authority would be on Wednesday, 28th September.
That would mean, since Her Majesty’s death on 8th September, 4 meetings were cancelled as a result, including the full council and the planning committee. On the day meetings can resume, the council is holding its Harbour Committee and Licensing Sub-Committee.
One item that was due to be discussed at the cancelled full council meeting was the approval of the draft Island Planning Strategy before it was sent off to the Planning Inspectorate.
There are no implications to the plan, a council spokesperson said, other than a short delay, as it will instead be considered at the earliest opportunity.
Discussions were underway about an extraordinary meeting of the full council, before its next scheduled meeting in November, but no date or decision has been confirmed.

Any old excuse not to work. This has to be the flimsiest yet.
Really it is just an excuse to be off work for them.
The photo of County Hall just shows how dirty it is–time for a cleanup
No no no ….
Us mere cash cow’s will have to pay for it !!!!!!!!
Council tax will rise “”””””
They will need more revenue for their air con ….and electricity for the fleet of car’s etc ….
Not to mention the pension pot ….
well they know how to milk it don’t they.and they say One item that was due to be discussed at the cancelled full council meeting was the approval of the draft Island Planning Strategy something they want to change before we lot get tosee it then
Hands up whose bosses will give you time off on full pay until the 28th? Still, those who complain seem to be assuming that they would have achieved something useful in that time….
Ok snob, what would you have achieved in that time? If I’m not mistaken we’ve all just had two years off… Maybe you found a cure for cancer during your spare time. Muppet.
Good job everyone doesn’t take their approach to things or the world would stop
That building is just a adult day-care for the islands elected(the islands supposed best and brighest). It’ll better serve the island if it was a brothel.
Well at least this puts an end to the COVID nonsense for a while.
How about arranging a meeting to discuss parking on Pavements along Great Preston Road in Ryde.
It’s about time someone from the Council got off their **** and paid a visit to Great Preston Road to see what is happening and then arranging for double yellow lines to be placed outside the Council Houses to Stop idiots parking on Pavements.
This Road as been a pain for years.
IW Council should send an Highways person to monitor how dangerous this
Road is.
I recommend Double Yellow Lines to be laid from Westridge to Nicholson Road
going into Ryde Town direction.
Traffic calming & Speed Cameras would also be a great idea to Stop speeding.
I also believe Permit Parking should be in place along this road.
So many company vans park along this Road day & night, making it impossible for tenants to park their vehicles when they arrive home from work.
Permit Parking would be fair for all.
Some households have 2 or more vehicles parked on this Road 24/7
Time to act IW Council
Nothing will happen
The Island MP is Useless he’s more bothered about Ukraine than Islanders.
The Council are also useless.
It’s like the blind leading the blind.
When someone gets killed along this dangerous Road, then they might do something about it.
Until then, they don’t give a ****
