The Isle of Wight Council is helping residents to get back to bin basics with recycling and waste habits.
As part of the #BackToBinBasics campaign, the Council is asking everyone to take a few minutes to check how they present their waste each week.
Natasha Dix, service director for waste, environment and planning, said:
“I’d like to thank residents for their support with recycling and our dedicated crew, who are out in weathers.
“Whether you’re new to the area, or just need a refresher, by going back to basics and following the waste guidelines on our website and in your collection booklet, we can all help keep our streets cleaner and reduce contamination in recycling. This campaign is about working together. By getting the basics right, we can make a big difference.”
Timing is everything
- Put out your food waste, recycling, or general waste on the kerbside by 07:00 on collection day. Check online at www.iow.gov.uk/waste or your annual waste and recycling booklet for which collection week you are on.
- You can place it outside after 19:00 the night before. Waste put out after 07:00 will not be collected.
- Crews can work until 22:00 on the day of collection. If your waste hasn’t been collected by 22:00, you can report it online at www.iow.gov.uk/waste
- If you report a missed bin, the collection lorry CCTV will check if your waste was out on time. If it was genuinely missed, the crew will return.
Keep bins safe and tidy
- On collection day, place your bin or sack at the kerbside in front of your home (or at agreed collection point if you are an Assisted or Collection Plus resident) using the containers provided.
- After collection, take your bins or sacks back inside by the next day.
- Leaving bins and sacks on the pavement between collection days is a hazard to people using the pavement and is considered fly-tipping.
- Add your house number or name to bins to help crews return them correctly and stop neighbours accidently taking yours.
What goes where and how
Recycling and waste are collected on alternate weeks. Food waste is collected weekly. Do not store any valuables in your bin or sack to avoid it being emptied accidently.

We will take extra recycling on recycling weeks if:
- It’s in clear or white bags
- The bags contain recyclables only
On recycling day
Green bin/gull sack: Glass, plastic, and metal. Mixed recycling can go loose in your green bin.
If you have a green gull sack, place your recycling in a clear/white bag inside your gull sack.
Black insert or blue gull sack: Paper, card, and cardboard.
Textiles: Put clean unwanted textiles in a separate bag (not black) and place it next to your bin/gull proof sack.
On general waste day:
- Black bin/gull sack: Waste that can’t be recycled.
- Household batteries: Put in a small clear bag and place on top of your closed black bin/sack, never inside, as they may catch fire. They have a separate section on the bin lorry where they are deposited safely.
Make sure all bin lids/sacks are closed and avoid overfilling to prevent spillage.
Contamination and extra waste
- If your bin/sack wasn’t collected because of the wrong items inside, you’ll get a sticker or tag explaining why. You will need to take your bin or sack back onto your property and take out the contaminated items before the next collection.
Extra waste on general waste day won’t be taken. Keep it until the next general waste collection day or book a slot at the Household Recycling Centres.

Most importantly to add to the spokespersons message is – “Occupiers must try to forget that this is part of a paid service that you are ENTITLED to, and that we are MANDATED to provide in lieu of the council. However, you are reminded that we will send out additional paid persons to check that there is only the
Big Brotherhelpfully approved items in your bins. We chose to disregard that you cannot affect what packaging your purchases arrive in, if it doesn’t fit in your designated receptacles, then do please bring it yourselves to our (paid for by you) centres at your own cost, where it will once again be scrutinised and assessed to ensure we can’t charge you for it again. You can of course wait until your bin has been emptied, then place the extra items into your bin for the next collection in 2 weeks time, we feel sure you will not accumulate another fortnight worth of rubbish that would need to go in that next collection too.”Remind me again why fly tipping is on the rise, the clean up of which costs us more per tonne than just collecting at the kerbside? If a service is not provided up to scratch, but it is illegal to withhold payment due to it being labelled a “tax”, then where are the public rights and protections?
But it is all ok, the lorries now carry fewer operators than ever before, have a shorter time slot to make the collections on longer routes, but they do have so many extra managers to ensure this is all making the owners/shareholders plenty of cash.
And all they want to do is add more housing which is either too expensive to purchase on IoW wages or that will house people that are not even paid wages at all and so do not contribute tax towards the service costs.
“Services” should not be profit based, ever! “Profits” in services should pay for strengthening an infrastructure, not to buy someone up the chain a bigger house and posher car.

Whilst I thank you for agreeing “Wightlink”, what in my comment gave ANY indication of my political views, or sought any input from you about who I should or shouldn’t vote for?
Your inability to even discuss a political party without descending into a tabloid “comic” play on party names is very telling of your political rhetoric and understanding. The Isle of Wight council is currently a multi-party control alliance, even adding Conservative and Reform representatives together doesn’t give them the majority you appear to think they have.
Without implying anything about my personal political views, I agree that it was Conservative policies that made things Private Sector that were once state owned, but it is also true that it is the current Labour Government running roughshod over green and brown field planning limitations in efforts to build new housing without infrastructure.

This is nothing about RECYCLING HABITS !!
It’s all about demanding that you comply with their rules make their waste collection process easier (and presumably therefore cheaper) for them…
Nothing at all in this is helping to identify what items should be put in your green recycling bin & what not.. & therefore encouraging people to recycle more of the applicable materials.
My rule of thumb is:-
if I’m not sure if something is recyclable or not,.. put it in the green bin & let them decide…
Hopefully, the binmen will endeavour to get the refuse INTO the wagon instead of all over the road.
Yesterday in the Osborne Rd area of Ryde, I was entertained by watching the binmen overfilling the food waste hopper, bags at least 2 feet or more above the top of the hopper, for once nothing spilled out.
If they eject waste onto the road should they not clear it up and not rely on the crows, seagulls and magpies to do it?
I agree 110%.
When the bin men in my area collect the waste, they leave
more mess behind than what they take away.
Bring back the old days when bin men lifted iron bins,
nowdays they leave wheelie bins in ridiculous positions
blocking walkways.
