Families across the Isle of Wight will receive a £15 food voucher, per child, to cover the May Half Term, it has been announced.
It was previously reported by Island Echo that the food voucher scheme would not be in operation during the upcoming school break. However, due to the change in government funding, action is now being taken by the Isle of Wight Council to support those families in greatest need.
A one-off emergency food voucher scheme announced today (Thursday) is aimed at helping households in urgent need over this half term. It will provide a voucher of £15 per child which can be spent in local supermarkets.
Eligible families must apply directly to the council before 16:00 on Wednesday 1st June to claim their voucher for the half term week, which can be emailed or posted out.
The scheme is available to:
- families eligible for benefits-related free school meals;
- children with a social worker;
- children open to early help;
- 2 to 4 year-olds eligible for Early Years Pupil Premium.
Families can check their eligibility and apply by contacting the council’s COVID-19 Helpline on 01983 823600.
Councillor Debbie Andre, Cabinet member for children’s services, has said:
“We appreciate what a difference the food voucher scheme made to families with school age children.
“We are offering a one-off opportunity for families who are in greatest need to receive a £15 voucher per child for this half term by contacting us directly.
“We are currently working with partners to further develop the range of support that will help Island residents who are finding it hard to make ends meet.”

How many of the vouchers will be sold on for cash to buy cigarettes/drink.
Of course instead they could always cook a wholesome home-cooked meal…
Oh SORRY!
Of course, they no longer teach ‘Economic, or Domestic Sciences’ at school these days, so VERY few of these so-called ‘needy’ people have absolutely no idea how to prepare an economic meal,
Let’s just buy microwave ready-meals or Maccy D’s instead!
You REALLY cannot help STUPID people – or at least those who do not want to be ‘educated’ or make any real attempt at actually improving their lot!
And you have definitely come across as a stupid person, who isn’t educated, or made any attempt at improving your lot if all you do is assume and judge others.
And just how many vouchers will actually be sent out before the end of the half-term break? Apply before 16:00 hrs Wednesday 1st June…
oh look – Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd of June are Bank Holidays – and then it’s the week-end. Personally do not anticipate many Council staff being at work, do you?

How many recipients will be drawing up in a BMW , fresh from hairdressers most with an orange spray tan false lashes and nails, chatting to other equally wonderful parents on the latest phone but claiming poverty.
I’m classed as disabled and have a car for disability yes a nice one, im not fit to work, I have 3 young children which during holidays I do need help financially sometimes. It’s not my fault that I got cancer is it? And no i don’t get my nails done, maybe think before you print. You can’t tarnish everyone.
So, for 2 kids, you can have a crate of beer, and a pack of 20 ciggies.
That’s a good deal, I was going to put my two on ebay, saves me the PayPal fees.
If we a had a decent functioning government this would not be happening, thanks boris for the import duties from importing from Eu where are those extra taxes going, ah to the consumers, no big red bus saying we would get those extra taxes
Why just if you have a Social Worker?, suggesting that only poor families have children abused/neglected. Many are well off 2car households .
What about the pensioners, can we have vouchers?
What? Sitting pretty in your mortgage free home enjoying your triple locked final salary pension?
Oh? Is that an unfair stereotype?
Sorry, I thought their use was compulsory when posting here.
Sitting pretty in their house that they worked hard for. Do you want everything handed to you on a plate?, benefit after benefit huh.
Woosh
OK so… If the School supplied a meal Monday to Friday over the lunch time throughout the holiday periods then those that need to feed their children could get them to school and they could have a meal.
Dont do vouchers, it is open to abuse and no guarentee the children themselves are getting the benefit from them.
Veg box in Lidl £1.50 full healthy fruit and veg.
Make a veg stew or buy a packet of good quality beef mince and add a little to the veg and make a pie.
Flour and marge very affordable. Box of 15 eggs just over a pound.
Yellow sticker bread is still fresh. Stop the complaining and get cooking.
Ok, so that’s 1 family meal you’ve suggested, at a rough price of £8 or so, not including cooking costs. What can I do with my £5 or £6 left over to feed a family for the rest of the week?
So what do you spend the £20 per child child allowance on?
What do you receive in tax credits or universal credit and any earnings?
What do you pay in rent and council tax?
And finally how come most with kids run cars , and go without little when the Government pays all equally?
People have a right to know as we find your lifestyle
Why have children IF you can’t afford them?
You can get a HUGE sack of pasta for cheap. Add tasty veg, make your own pasta sauce. Make a nice pasta bake. Filling, feeds loads, costs barely anything. Or as Gorob suggests, a big stew or a pie. With a bit of effort and thought surprisingly nice, healthy and good proportion meals can be done. Many meals can be achieved with what some people pay for a McDs etc. Watch Eat Better for Less. It certainly gave me an insight. All the best.
Disgusted again by the nasty comments on here – there are sone families genuinely in need. Shame on you!
Hopefully the vouches EXCLUDE booze fags or fat git treats!
I’m not sure why my last comment was not posted, but I’m disappointed by the attitudes of sone on here. They are sone people that are genuinely struggling.
£15 what an insult. Should be at least £25 and only for food and milk, no fags or booze.
