Firefighters have established a cordon on a quiet road in Brading this evening (Tuesday) as a result of a gas main being struck and catching fire.
1 appliance from Ryde is currently in attendance on Quay Lane, where contractors from SGN are working to isolate the gas pipe.
Local residents have said that flames can be seen coming from the main close to the railway bridge.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been called in just incase the fire spreads to nearby fencing and shrubbery.
It’s understood that the pipe was struck as a result of utility works in the area sometime around 19:45.
Access to the far end of Quay Lane is now blocked by the numerous vehicles in attendance.

This could be serious, the train should be halted, as gas can build up and explode when the air to gas ratio is at a certain criteria.
Any danger to us around it
yeah 100% billy is correct very dangerous
If the gas main is fractured & already on fire the gas cant build up & explode its burning off already
Once the gas is burning, it’s safe. On your cooker hob, the flame doesn’t go back down the feed pipe, it doesn’t burn fast enough. Acetylene does, though!
Unburnt gas would build up enough to explode.
The only danger is that surrounding combustibles – grass, bushes etc – could catch light, but they will be monitoring that.
I think the rail tunnel is short there so should be no major damage, and the experts on hand would tell you to leave if there were any danger now. So please dont worry.
Did in ” die hard” yipee ki aye!!!
