The Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and partner agencies – Isle of Wight NHS Trust, Earl Mountbatten Hospice, Isle of Wight Council are currently consulting on the Isle of Wight End of Life Care Strategy and are seeking views from Islanders.
End of life care is a key priority for the Isle of Wight. The changing health and social care landscape has necessitated a review of our local end of life care services and prompted the development of an up to date plan for end of life care on the Island, to reflect the current and future needs of the population and ensure that excellent end of life care is available to all.
The aim of the End of Life Strategy 2015 – 2020 for the Isle of Wight is to help those with advanced, progressive and incurable illness to live as well as possible until they die, and to die in their place of choice, regardless of their diagnosis by:
- supporting people at the end of life and their carers;
- the prevention and relief of suffering through early identification and assessment;
- effective treatment of pain and other symptoms; and
- through the provision of psychological, spiritual, social and practical support, up to and including the period of bereavement.
The End of Life Care Strategy should cover the needs of all people at the end of life, embedding end of life care as ‘business as usual’ across the Island’s health and social care economy – make it everyone’s business.
Following extensive stakeholder engagement with organisations and individuals across the Island during development of this strategy, we are now seeking feedback on the draft strategy and what people feel needs to happen over the next five years to ensure that Island residents experience good end of life care and support.
Public consultation will take place from 3rd July 2015 to 7th August 2015.
There will be a Public Consultation Workshop on Wednesday 15th July 2015 at the Riverside Centre. Anyone wanting to attend is asked to register you interest by emailing [email protected] or calling 01983 552 064.
There will also be an Information Stand at the John Cheverton Centre, Earl Mountbatten Hospice on Wednesday 22nd July and Tuesday 28th July from 14:00-16:30.
Nigel Hartley, Chief Executive of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice stated:
“I am happy to have joined Earl Mountbatten Hospice as the new CEO at a time when the new Island-wide End of Life Care Strategy is coming to fruition. As a lead provider of end of life care on the Island, we are happy with the definitive focus on getting end of life care right for more people across our community, and acknowledging that success depends on doing this together through greater partnership working across all sectors. We also wholeheartedly endorse the imperative that our whole health and social care workforce need training, educating and supporting effectively in order to achieve our collective aims”
Dr Mark Pugh, Executive Medical Director for the IW NHS Trust sai:
“Ensuring that people experience good end of life care is just as important as ensuring the services we provide at other stages of life are good. All too often we are reticent at talking about End of Life Care and this consultation is the ideal opportunity to discuss this issue which will affect every one of us. The Trust fully supports the development of this strategy. It will further strengthen links between those involved in the care of these patients to improve care.”
