The Isle of Wight Council wants to hear from residents and local groups about new plans to improve cycling and walking routes across the Island.
The authority is looking to adopt four Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) as Supplementary Planning Documents (SPD) within the Island Plan.
The plans have been developed in close collaboration with local communities, parish and town councils as well as various local groups and organisations.
Endorsed by the council’s Cabinet in May 2023 and June 2024, the LCWIPs outline priority improvements for cycling and walking routes across the Island.
The draft LCWIPs under consideration cover the following areas:
- Bay Area
- Bembridge, Brading and St Helens
- Cowes, Northwood and Gurnard
- East Cowes and Whippingham
The council wants to adopt these plans so they can be used when making decisions on planning applications and new developments.
Councillor Paul Fuller, who is responsible for planning, said:
“The local communities in the areas covered by these four LCWIPs have put a great deal of effort into helping inform these fantastic plans.
“By adopting them all as SPDs, we can make sure that development coming forward through the planning process helps to contribute towards some of excellent sustainable transport projects within them.
“I look forward to people commenting during the consultation and then taking the documents to my Cabinet colleagues early next year.”
The consultation is open until 17:00 on Friday, 17th January 2025.
After this, the council will review the comments and aim to adopt the plans in February.
For more information on how to respond and to view copies of the draft SPDs, please visit the Supplementary Planning Document consultations page on the council’s website.

All cyclists should display a Number plate so
when they jump Red Lights they can be fined.
Also STOP cyclists cycling side by side holding each
others hands.
Biggest pain in the a@se are cyclists who are selfish
B’stards when cycling on roads us motorists pay to be on.
Respect motorists. I am fed up with reading think Bike
Think van / car
Even though there are some cycle lanes on the island,
majority of cyclists don’t use them!
many years later after money put aside ..still nothing new to report..
There isn’t much point spending money on cycle ways if cyclists continue to clog up the roads.
The world plan is to get vehicles off the road and
everyone cycles or walks everywhere
(All part of the climate scam)
The Elites can create floods and storms etc,
People then believe the climate scam.

Lol
The island is full of physcho paths, oops
I mean cycle paths.
The jokes are getting worse.
Boom Boom
Yes, but I think there’s far too many cyclists who actually enjoy holding cars up. I get the impression that they see the car driver as their enemy and it’s a kind of power trip to make life difficult for them.
An example is that there’s a perfectly good shared cycleway/footpath between Sandown and Newport which goes on to Cowes and runs almost parallel to the road the entire way, and yet you still get cyclists, groups of them sometimes, insisting on using the road and holding up whole lines of traffic.
The Island has hundreds of miles of cycleways, cyclists just need to learn to use them.
Rachel Reeves £22 Billion black hole will have nothing on this, The area covering Cowes, Northwood and Gurnard comes in their own figures to over £10 million!
