Conservative’s Simon Richards has announced his candidacy for the upcoming Central Rural Ward by-election – with the Greens’ Julia Laursen also throwing her hat into the ring.
An experienced public sector professional and dedicated Islander with over 30 years of community involvement, Simon is committed to being a strong voice for local residents.
Speaking about his intention to stand, Simon says:
“I’ve lived and worked here, and I’m passionate about preserving our rural villages while addressing the key issues affecting our community.
“With my background in public sector finance and charity work, I have the experience to get things done and ensure our voices are heard.”
Julia – a certified Neuro-Linguistic Programming coach, trainer and therapist – has lived in Chillerton for the last 20 years, after returning from Germany to bring her children into the UK school.
Julia is currently a Chillerton and Gatcombe Parish Councillor.
She’s said:
“Since I came second in the last county elections in 2021, I have continued to support residents in Arreton, Rookley, Godshill and Merstone and as a parish councillor for Chillerton.
“I am ready to serve you on the Isle of Wight Council alongside a strong team of Greens at County Hall.
“Despite growing up in a Conservative household, I always felt myself to be a guardian of the voiceless with strong environmental values.
“As a life coach and therapist, I work with a wide variety of people. Working together for the greater good is my motivation for standing for local council, regardless of political beliefs.”
Simon has earned the endorsement of Conservative Group Leader, Councillor Ed Blake, who praised his approach to community service and problem-solving:
“Simon has been a strong advocate for the community, consistently pushing for solutions that benefit everyone. He will represent our interests with integrity and dedication. His proactive approach will make a real difference for Central Rural.
“We need a councillor who listens and stands up for the residents of Central Rural. With your support, we can ensure a strong, dedicated voice in the Council Chamber. Together, we can make real progress and continue to build a better future for our community.”
The Central Rural Ward by-election will take place on Thursday 1st May.
In May 2021’s local elections, Suzie Ellis won by a comfortable margin, winning 619 votes and as runner-up, Julia received 313 votes. The Labour Party’s Richard Hill also stood in 2021, receiving 146 votes.
